Town of Windsor is Hiring a Fleet Mechanic I Near Windsor, CO

Hiring Range: $25.04 - $27.23 per hour, depending on experience/qualifications.
Work Schedule: Generally, 40 or more hours per week – typically 7:00 am-3:30 pm Monday-Friday, with some evenings, weekends, and holiday events as needed. On-call scheduling will occur as required.
NATURE OF WORK
As a member of the Public Works – Fleet Division, individuals in this level one position of our Fleet Mechanic (I) series are responsible for performing a wide array of preventative maintenance services for various town divisions, including Police, Streets, Utilities, Parks, and Recreation, specifically, inspecting, warranty work, lubricating and servicing light, medium, and heavy pickups, SUV’s and police vehicles in a dedicated quick lube bays. This position will also perform minor diagnoses and some repairs to sedans, pickups, light construction equipment, and attachments, specialized equipment like snow and ice removal, and small equipment such as trimmers, blowers, mowers, etc., to ensure the safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of our Town’s Fleet. The Fleet Mechanic (I) position is essential in keeping our fleet in optimal condition and ensuring the entire fleet of town equipment is in safe operating condition and adheres to the rules and regulations of the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) and department policies.
The Fleet Mechanic I is required to perform work in a manner consistent with and exemplary of the town’s PRIDE philosophies and the town’s Equal Employment Opportunity policy.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Fleet Mechanic I works under the direct supervision of the Fleet Manager to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects while working in the office and shop, for both routine and complex circumstances.

No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The Fleet Mechanic I is assigned specific tasks, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulation and practices. Incumbents in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
  • Performs preventative maintenance services on all town Fleet units consisting of light-duty trucks and automobiles, turf and agricultural equipment, and small engine equipment in a timely manner. These include but are not limited to pickups, trailers, forklift, passenger vehicles, police vehicles, mowers, and turf maintenance vehicles. 
  •  Performs pre-and post-trip inspections, preventative maintenance checks and minor repairs on division’s equipment and other town vehicles to ensure they operate properly.
  •  Safely drive and operate equipment Town of Windsor vehicles and equipment for preventative maintenance services. 
  •  Assists the senior Fleet Mechanics with repairs in an apprentice role as needed.
  •  Lubricate moving parts, refills fluids, and replaces belts, hoses, wiper blades, and tires.
  • Complies with the proper storage, use, and disposal of hazardous fuels, oils, lubricants, and cleaners.
  • Documents all services performed, as well as recording any parts and supplies ordered/used in accordance with established record-keeping procedures.
  • Performs snow operation tasks by shoveling, plowing, removing, and hauling snow and ice, along with applying deicers to streets and roads.
  •  Clean equipment and Public Services Facility shops and yard areas as necessary.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
  •  Responds to emergencies or after-hours call-outs as needed.
  • Performs a variety of heavy laboring activities including the use of hand tools, light power equipment, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Inputs daily work data into a computer and maintains records of work performed.
  • Perform and foster an environment of safe work practices and report safety issues promptly to the direct supervisor. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by direct supervisor.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints, as directed.
OTHER DUTIES
Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
  • The Fleet Mechanic (I) position is part of the snow removal program which includes scheduled on-call responsibilities typically during the months of October to April. Fleet Mechanic I’s are required to review and acknowledge the Snow Guidelines annually. 
  • The Fleet Mechanic (I) position participates in the Shared Fleet Vehicle Program, which requires an annual motor vehicle record check.
  • May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions.
  • Continues educational and certification requirements in order to remain abreast of current methods and procedures.
  • May participate in town employee committees, projects, or assignments as required.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
  • Assists other town departments/divisions, as necessary.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be 21 years of age by the date of employment.
  • One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in automotive, light truck, medium, and heavy-duty truck maintenance and/or repair, and other equipment maintenance operations, or completion of an accredited automotive or diesel repair program.
  • Preferred completion of an accredited college, university, or vocational education in the areas of automotive technology and repair, diesel repair, or heavy-duty equipment repair.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class “B” Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain ASE certifications A1 (Engine Repair) and A5 (Brakes) within 18 months of employment.
  • Certifications from major manufacturers such as International, Allison, CAT, John Deere, Bendix, Cummins, etc., may be considered in lieu of ASE if they are deemed equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning certification as specified under section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA-approved program within 18 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain FEMA certifications: 100, 200, and 700 within one (1) year of employment.
  • CPR/1st Aid certification or ability to attain within three (3) months of employment.

  • Ability to respond to emergencies or after-hours call-outs and work a flexible schedule, including overtime work when required, working weekends and holidays as needed, and working on-call status with a maximum one-hour response time for yearly on-call rotation and for snow emergencies.

EquipmentPosition requires use of various equipment including pickups, trailers, single & tandem dump trucks, snowplow trucks, streets sweepers, road sweepers, vac truck & trailer, toolkat & attachments, skid steers, rollers, tampers, plate compactors, saws, weed eaters, hand blowers, paint striper, pumps, compressors, sanders, common hand and power tools, shovels, rakes, brooms and wrenches. Inspection and testing equipment such as locators, manhole hooks, hand tools, and ladders. Specialized equipment including asphalt patcher, post-hole pounder, air tools, welding & torch equipment, and other specialized light-duty power equipment. Operate staff vehicles, refueling stations, electric car charging stations, fluid dispensing systems, wash facility & equipment, two-way radios, computers/tablets/other digital equipment, calculators, copiers, printers, fax machines, telephones.
  2. MaterialsPosition requires the use of weed chemicals like herbicides, pesticides, fuels, oils, lubricants, adhesives, degreasers, grease, refrigerants, antifreeze, and cleaning supplies. Paints, sealers, lacquers/thinners/solvents, epoxy’s, concrete/cement, dirt/backfill, sand, road base, gravel, hot & cold patch asphalt, chemical hardeners, concrete sealers, and other materials as needed.

The physical activities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.
The physical requirements of this position are considered Heavy Work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The employee is subject to hazards, including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.
