School Resource Officer
The Town of Rocky Mount is currently accepting applications for a pool of qualified individuals for a School Resource Officer. This position involves community-oriented policing, working with the Franklin County Public School system, as well as liaison duties between the school, community agencies, and the police department. The position will also assist in the patrol division when school breaks take place.
Current law enforcement certification through DCJS is required, as well as a minimum of two years law enforcement experience. Successful applicants are required to pass a comprehensive background investigation, physical, psychological evaluation, and screenings.
Relative to the school system, duties will include but are not limited to protecting lives and property of the students, staff, and school; investigate criminal activities on/adjacent to school property; formulate and provide educational crime prevention programs; participate in campus activities; evaluate and improve the truancy program with school officials to decrease student absenteeism. Other responsibilities will include but not limited to proactive patrol of corporate limits utilizing community policing methods; maintenance of open communication with supervisors and other officers by oral and written reports; conduct and/or assist others in investigations, traffic control, and event security; protect property and provide public safety services; accurately record information on standard forms and incident reports; testify in legal proceedings; perform basic law enforcement duties with the capability to exercise considerable judgment in application of local, state, and federal laws.
The starting salary range will be $51,125 - $62,291 depending upon years of certified law enforcement experience. Excellent fringe benefits such as, but not limited to, paid overtime, eligibility of take-home vehicle, relaxed beard/tattoo policy, $35/month cell phone stipend, Virginia Retirement System (VRS) member, employee only health, dental, and vision paid for by employer, contribution of up to $500 by employer towards a flexible spending account and begin accruing 6.50 hours every two weeks of paid time off (PTO). Life insurance and short-term disability paid for by employer. General work hours are 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM while school is in session. When school is out of session, this position will assist the patrol division.
