Mead Police Department Pay Rates

Police Officer Level One - $36.19 per hour

Policer Officer Level Two - $38.00 per hour

Police Officer Level Three - $39.90 per hour (this has been identified as the Lateral 1 entry point)

Police Officer Level Four - $41.90 per hour (this has been identified as the Lateral 2 entry point)

Police Officer Level Five - $43.99 per hour (this has been identified as the Lateral 3 entry point)

Police Officer Level Six - $46.19 per hour

Lateral 1 requires at least four (4) years of prior law enforcement experience

Time worked as a corrections / jail deputy will be credited up to 50% (e.g. two (2) years working in the jail two (2) years Patrol experience will count for the four (4) years' experience for this level only)

Lateral 2 requires at least five (5) years of prior law enforcement patrol experience*

Lateral 3 requires at least six (6) years of prior law enforcement patrol experience*

Lateral 2 and 3 levels do not consider time worked as a corrections / jail deputy

Summary of Duties

  • Responds to calls for service and conducts proactive enforcement and community policing.
  • Investigates crime scenes or accidents and assists other officers.
  • Detects and prevents criminal activities by surveillance of assigned business and residential areas. Notes possible criminal occurrences and takes steps to prevent criminal actions.
  • Promotes crime prevention by initiating contact with businesses and residents including explaining applicable laws, soliciting cooperation in crime reporting, and otherwise creating good rapport with citizens.
  • Protects evidence, takes statements from witnesses, and assists detectives in specialized investigations.
  • Provides emergency medical assistance and assist medical / fire personnel.
  • Enforces traffic laws, vehicle codes, and promotes traffic safety. Directs traffic, reports unsafe road conditions, and otherwise promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety.
  • Conducts community oriented policing activities, including eliciting business and community participation, working with community groups, conducting welfare checks, and other community policing activities.
  • Prepares written reports and logs and manages case information.
  • Prepares and provides testimony in court and works with attorneys.
  • Provides support for code enforcement and animal control activities.
  • Issues appropriate citations and takes immediate actions to mitigate problems and disputes.
  • May be assigned to a specialty unit or assigned.
  • Trains and mentors other officers in areas of expertise or specialty.
  • Performs other related work, as required and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License (within 30 days of hire) and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must possess, or be in the process for, the State of Colorado Peace Officers' Standards Certificate (POST Certification).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to maintain the required law enforcement certifications.
  • Must be able to successfully remain current on all Mead Police Department and Colorado POST training requirements.
  • Must live within a 22 mile radius of WCR 34 and I-25 (see map below).

Disqualifications

Any instances of the following criteria may be grounds for disqualification of an applicant from the selection process for any position with the Mead Police Department.

If it is determined you were dishonest or provided false information during the hiring process you will be permanently removed from all selection processes.

Drug / Alcohol Use :

  • The Town of Mead follows "41 U.S. Code Chapter 81 - Drug-free Workplace" and will evaluate each candidate based on their unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession, or use of a controlled substance.
  • Unwillingness to adhere to the drug-free workplace act, or evidence you have not adhered to this during previous employment.

Driving Record :

Charges (not final disposition) within the previous 3 years to include serious bodily injury or death to another while operating a motor vehicle;

revocation or loss of driving privileges by government or court order (unless by judgement); habitual traffic offender; Driving Under the Influence / Impairment of alcohol or drugs.

Dismissed cases will be evaluated.

Criminal History :

  • Any POST approved Disqualifying Incidents as listed on their website :
  • Conviction of any domestic violence related offense.
  • Self-admitted commission of any felony as an adult.
  • Applicant is currently subject to any restraining order pursuant to a domestic violence proceeding, or which prohibits them from possessing a firearm.
  • Any pattern of criminal activity (self-admitted or otherwise).

Character :

  • Falsifying official documentations or certifications for personal gain or benefit.
  • Current or former member or supporter of any group that seeks to alter the form of government of the United States of America by unconstitutional means.
  • Prior conduct that could bring discredit upon the Department, or the individual.
  • Any dishonorable discharge from military service.
  • If you are the subject an on-going employment investigation or the subject of a personal civil or criminal trial, you will need to wait until its conclusion to apply.

  • Knowledge of police department policies, as well as municipal, state, and federal laws with the ability to properly apply them in appropriate circumstances.
  • Knowledge of emergency medical and first aid practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, Town ordinances and State statutes.
  • Skill in operating motor vehicles in hazardous situations and with due regard in emergency situations.
  • Skill in using weapons and other police equipment.
  • Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with citizens in a wide variety of stressful situations.
  • Ability to observe and assess potential problems and formulate proposed solutions.
  • Ability to act effectively in crisis situations.
  • Ability to investigate situations and prepare written reports.
  • Ability to physically detain law violators.
  • Ability to pass standard medical exam within normal parameters specifically with regard to the listed essential job functions.
  • Ability to perform all essential physical functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups and communicate comprehensively and professionally both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to draft clear and concise written correspondence, such as reports, logs, and email communications.
  • Ability to interpret mathematical data including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Physical Demands :

  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking with the occasional need to run, kneel, stoop, squat, and climb.
  • Requires the ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Frequent hand / eye coordination to operate motor vehicle and equipment.
  • Vision for reading, recording, and interpreting information.
  • Frequent speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens.

Work Environment :

  • Essential duties are performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions with the need to be able to operate a motor vehicle in these conditions.

The Town of Mead offers a comprehensive benefit package and pays a major portion of the employee premium to make these benefits more affordable for our employees.

Coverage begins on the 1st of the month following the date of hire, unless otherwise noted. Full time employees may participate in the following benefits :

Insurance :

The Town of Mead's medical, vision, dental, and life insurance provider is Colorado Employer Benefit Trust (CEBT). The town pays 100% of employee coverage and 50% of employee's covered dependents for the least expensive plan.

Medical : Employees may choose to enroll in one of following medical plan options which have a broad network of doctors, hospitals and health providers :

  • Kaiser Permanente HMO 45 plan
  • CEBT PPO 4 plan (UMR A UnitedHealthcare Company)
  • Medical Hospital Reimbursement Plan

Dental : A comprehensive dental program is available that provides access to a broad network of dental providers. Coverage is through Delta Dental.

Vision : Employees that choose to enroll in our CEBT vision plan may take advantage of benefits that include coverage towards contacts and glasses.

Life and Dependent Life : The Town of Mead provides basic life coverage up to $50,000 for employees who are regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week.

Additional coverage may be purchased through a voluntary life insurance program.

Short Term / Long Term Disability * : The Town's short-term and long-term disability coverage is provided by The Hartford Group.

Premium costs for employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week is paid for 100% by the Town. Long-term disability coverage is effective the first month following 60 days of employment.

LTD does not apply to Police due to FPPA benefits.

Spending Accounts :

The Town offers a Section 125 Flexible Spending Account through Alerus. The Town matches medical account contributions up to $500 / year for eligible employees.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA) : Employees have the option to contribute to their FSA which can be used to pay for qualifying medical, dental and vision expenses.

Dependent Care FSA : Dependent care FSA allows for reimbursement of dependent childcare or elder day care expenses on a tax favored basis.

Retirement Benefits :

The Town offers a 457 defined contribution plan through Nationwide. The Town matches up to 5% of an employee's pay. Commissioned police officers are not eligible for the Town match.

For 2024, the maximum contribution (employee and employer) is $23,000 annually. Catch-up provisions are up to $7,500 for those aged 50 and older.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) :

Our EAP provides free and confidential short-term counseling to help employees with a variety of personal challenges. Other services and resources are offered through Triad's EAP.

Pension Benefits - Police Only (FPPA) :

The Town's commissioned police officers are covered by a defined benefit pension plan through the Fire and Police Pension Association (FPPA).

2024 employee / employer contribution rates are 12% / 9.5%, respectively.

Disability Benefits - Police Only (FPPA) :

The Town's full time commissioned police officers are covered by the Statewide Death & Disability Plan through FPPA. Benefits provide 24-hour coverage, both on and off duty.

The Town currently covers 100% of the premium which is 3.4% of the employee's base pay.
