Town of Matthews is Hiring a Special Events Team Member Near Matthews, NC

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs responsible work for the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department working with the general public, assisting the recreation staff at events, programs, and concerts, assisting with the maintenance and safety of parks and/or community center, and other related activities as required. Work is performed under the daily supervision of and reports to the Special Events Supervisor or Special Events Assistant, and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine the thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.

Position usually works one event per month, but could be up to three. Hours may vary depending on event (days and evenings).

Position average 6-10 hours per month, with a possibility of more during Matthews Alive Festival and the month of December.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Does not include pre-event planning but does include the following at events: 

  • Staff our Parks & Recreation tent, provides information to patrons, and assists with general requests.
  • Staff various children's activities (may include bounce houses, crafts, etc.).
  • Oversee facilities, buildings, and restrooms during events and the safety and needs of patrons therein.
  • Assist event staff with patron surveys.
  • Tear down at the conclusion of events and putting elements away in storage.
  • Perform the methods and techniques required to provide recreation/leisure services, outdoor/nature programming, and special events.
  • Assist with events and programs.
  • Set up, implement, and break down event elements, including tents, tables, chairs, trash cans, signage, movie screens, decorations, games, etc.
  • Assist with registrations (electronic and on-site), crafts, crowd control, program instruction, leadership of activities and games, supervision of interactive event elements, and staffing of informational exhibits.
  • Sell concessions; collect program fees and accounts for assets.
  • Operate telephone system, copy machine, and other office equipment.
  • Conduct light cleaning of building and grounds as needed; maintain supplies and other items in restrooms.
  • Oversee the conduct and safety of program participants.
  • Operate heating and air-conditioning systems in the facilities.
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of one or more phases of community recreation events and activities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Skill in customer service excellence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public and disseminate accurate information, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to provide leadership for group recreation and event participants.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Ability to use instruments, tools, or other equipment used in recreation and event programs.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, including a knowledge of applicable software packages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff, program participants, and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform medium-level work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; 20 pounds of force frequently; and 10 pounds constantly, in various lifting positions, such as overhead, chest height, and more.

Must possess the visual acuity to operate office and building equipment such as the telephone, copy machine, security systems, heating and air-conditioning systems, and other equipment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and themselves; May be subject to hazards including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, in large crowds of people, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, dust, mists, fumes, oils, tight quarters, and narrow passageways. This position is subject to all State and Federal OSHA regulations, including, but not limited to the following: bloodborne pathogens, hazard communication/GHS, personal protective equipment, slips, trips, and falls, etc.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Prefer any combination of education equivalent to some coursework from high school and some experience in recreational programming, event planning, project management, or related field.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • First Aid/CPR Certification required or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of employment.
  • May require possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. 
  • Required to pass a background check and drug screening.
