MAINTENANCE WORKER I/II

The Town will hire either a Maintenance Worker I or Maintenance Worker II depending on the candidate's qualifications.

MAINTENANCE WORKER I

Salary Range: $3,912 - $5,359

DEFINITION

Perform a variety of duties in the inspection, maintenance and repair of park grounds, landscaped areas, structures, and street and/or drainage facilities. Perform routine unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks under close supervision.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from a Maintenance Supervisor. Functional supervision may be provided by other higher classification maintenance personnel. This position does not exercise supervision over others.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operate construction, maintenance and landscape equipment, including power and hand tools (i.e., weed eaters, saws, chain saws, blowers, and drills; shovels, picks, rakes, hoes, and brooms); perform preventive maintenance and light repairs on equipment.
  • Inspect park grounds, landscaped areas, structures, streets, medians, drainage facilities, traffic signs and signals and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism.
  • Clean and clear park grounds, landscaped areas, structures and street facilities of debris and hazardous conditions; set-up park facilities and structures for special events.
  • Ensure all traffic control signs are in place and visible; correct problems by repairing and/or installing signs.
  • Assist in installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation facilities.
  • Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and color spots; clear sites of weeds.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the construction and repair of park, landscape and street facilities.
  • Perform heavy physical labor, including the ability to lift 50 pounds; operate light street and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Utilize computer to enter daily work reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and/or repair work.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Use of standard hand and power tools.

Ability to:

  • Respond to emergency situations quickly and efficiently; and work autonomously.
  • Walk for continuous periods of up to two hours; repeatedly stoop and bend; work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Demonstrate proficient eye and hand coordination.
  • Drive a motor vehicle.
  • Withstand exposure to potentially noxious weeds, insects and solvents; handle chemicals and cleaners.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds and carry 30 pounds.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with the public.
  • Work well with co-workers in a team environment.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

One (1) year of general construction or maintenance experience.

Education:

Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

MAINTENANCE WORKER II

Salary Range: $4,343 - $5,949

DEFINITION

Perform a variety of duties in the inspection, maintenance and repair of park grounds, landscaped areas, structures, and street and/or drainage facilities. This is a broad classification with individual positions assigned to specific functional areas; duties and assignments may overlap depending on the operational needs of the department and staffing levels.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from a Maintenance Supervisor. May exercise supervision over other maintenance personnel as assigned.

  • Standard street maintenance methods.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Use of standard hand and power tools.

Ability to:

  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Execute duties based on intelligent judgment decisions.
  • Perform heavy physical labor, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Drive a truck or handle unsupervised assignments alone, or with other maintenance workers as assigned.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.

One (1) year of general maintenance experience performing duties similar to those performed by a Maintenance Worker I in the Town of Danville.

Education:

Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade with the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATION(S)

Possession of a valid Class C Driver’s License with a good driving record, or license in another state with the ability to obtain a California license within 30 days of hire, and a good driving record.
