Town of Christiansburg, VA is Hiring an Operations Supervisor, Utilities Near Christiansburg, VA

Under direction of the Utilities Assistant Director, the Operations Supervisor, Utilities assists with administrative and managerial work functions associated with planning, organizing, and directing of the Utilities division. The position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily operation, maintenance, and repair/construction of Town water and wastewater infrastructure and associated programs. Responsible for providing the necessary supervision, technical guidance and direction to facility staff and provides highly responsible and complex assistance to the Assistant Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals; assists in hiring new workers; provides training to staff members
• Plans and coordinates work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; develops work schedules to ensure adequate coverage; creates and distributes work schedules and assignments; approves leave time and reviews usage; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work.
• Consults with assigned staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; conducts routine meetings with staff to discuss project objectives, material and equipment needs, work assignments, etc.; resolves special or unusual requirements on projects.
• Assists in developing and implementing department policies and procedures; conducts work site visits to monitor work in progress on all projects; ensures compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, standards, policies, procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations.
• Assists in directing, monitoring, and inspecting projects; reviews blueprints or work instructions; assists with the procurement of needed materials; monitors project timelines and goals; provides updates on project status and estimated completion times as requested
• Perform various financial tasks involved in department operations; assist in developing and administering department budget; capital improvement planning; monitors expenditures for adherence to established budgetary parameters; submits project cost accounting and project cost projections for labor, materials and equipment needs
• Maintains inventory of stock materials to complete tasks; obtains, secures, and monitors pricing on materials and goods; prepares cost estimates on equipment; prepares and processes purchase orders; maintains related documentation
• Receives and responds to complaints and inquiries; receives, answers, and remedies any difficult complaints or problems that cannot be handled by subordinates; keeps related records and makes required reports
• Responds to emergency situations involving public works operations, such as water issues, sewer issues, road/street issues, utility locating, inclement weather and natural disasters; assigns and directs emergency work crews as needed
• Prepares, proofreads, completes, and/or receives various forms, reports, correspondence, performance evaluations, personnel documentation, incident/accident reports, work orders, invoices, policies, procedures, manuals, reference materials, and/or other documentation; forwards or retains as appropriate
• Uses excellent communication skills to provide responsible and complex support to supervisor(s), subordinates, Town employees/divisions, citizens, businesses, and agencies with respect to work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice and direction
• Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends and/or conducts workshops and training sessions as appropriate
• Performs other duties as required
