Description

Cary is committed to an inclusive approach to recreation and encourages individuals with and without disabilities to participate together in our programs. Inclusion Counselors play a critical role in fulfilling our goal of fostering a supportive environment in which individuals with disabilities are able to participate in Cary camps as fully as possible. As an Inclusion Counselor, you will supervise and assist participants with disabilities in a variety of camp settings. You will also serve as a 1:1 aide, modifying activities as needed for camper participation alongside all campers. Ideal applicants must possess patience, flexibility, and a "can-do" attitude, with a passion for providing caring, excellent customer service while interacting with citizens and colleagues.
The season is from May to October 2024. This is a seasonal part-time, non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours.

Typical Tasks

  • Actively participates and engages all participants in activities;
  • Supervises and assists participants with disabilities in summer camps;
  • Modifies activities as needed, or provides reasonable accommodations for participation;
  • Implements participant inclusion plan recommendations (inclusion services);
  • Assists participants with personal care activities including toileting, dressing, hygiene, and management of belongings and/or medication;
  • Monitors participants for safety and addresses behavior concerns;
  • Documents and/or relays accident/incident information to the appropriate staff;
  • Communicates effectively with coworkers, parents/guardians, care providers, and supervisors;
  • Completes appropriate paperwork for inclusion support;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of best practices for working with people with disabilities; familiarity with personal care activities such as toileting, dressing, management of belongings and/or medication; ability to take initiative and exercise sound judgment and leadership when monitoring participants for safety and addressing behavior concerns as they arise; general knowledge of implementing programs for persons who have disabilities; general knowledge of equipment and supplies required for programs; ability to develop and make activity adaptations and modifications for a variety of ability levels; ability to work and communicate effectively and enthusiastically with persons of all ages and all ability levels; ability to organize and schedule time; and ability to complete CPR/First Aide Certification.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree with major course work in therapeutic recreation/recreational therapy, general recreation, physical education or related field.
Requires some prior experience working in programs/environments serving persons with disabilities.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
