Description

Cary has an outstanding opportunity for a Construction Technician Ito join our team and proudly support Cary’s commitment to providing excellent service to our citizens through maintaining many important utilities and structures that help the town function smoothly.
As a Construction Technician I,you have a unique opportunity to change lives through exceptional service. The Department of Public Works is looking for a new team member to perform manual work in the installation, construction, repair, maintenance and care of 503 miles of streets, 1,000 miles of water and sewer lines. A Construction Technician I also assists with the inspection and repair of our stormwater infrastructure and are key members of our Adverse Weather Response Team.

Most importantly, the candidate will take pride in their accomplishments and the difference they make in the Cary community.

Typical Tasks

Participates in the repair and maintenance of streets and the installation, repair, and replacement of water and sewer lines and related facilities;
Performs various street maintenance duties such as cleaning and repairing catch basins, patching holes and working on asphalt crews;
Makes street and pipe cuts using water trailer and saw;
Installs valves using valve insertion machine;
Installs, repairs and maintains reclaimed water meters;
Responds to service calls on weekend and night duty; assesses need for resources and establishes priorities; restores water service to customers after hours;
Keeps records of work performed;
Provides assistance as needed to higher level personnel and give guidance when needed to lower level personnel;
Attends training on safety and technical subjects;
Cleans up spills in street after accidents; spreads sand for chemical spills;
Removes dead animals from the street;
Cleans out manholes;
Repairs storm drains, French drains and sample stations;
Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, and other materials, tools and equipment;
Digs, fills and tamps trenches and asphalt, ditches, pipe lines and hand digs to locate utility lines;
Operates trucks, tractors, loaders, tampers and jackhammers in grounds preparation and maintenance work;
Sets out traffic control signs and barricades; controls and directs traffic;
Uses snow plow and related equipment during storm and emergency response;
Makes water and sewer taps and repairs leaks;
May assist in locating water and sewer lines for contractors;
Replaces, repairs, and installs sites to original conditions;
Operates all types of construction and utility repair and service equipment, depending upon skill level;
Responds to and answers questions from the public;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance work;
Knowledge of municipal maintenance and construction practices; Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work; Knowledge of hazardous materials including asbestos; Ability to work safely; Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment; Ability to keep records; dependability; Ability to communicate with the public; Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and work in often challenging conditions.
Physical Requirements:
Work in this class is heavy work and requires exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain and asbestos. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders and crawling into tight spaces. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. The ability to see is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED and some experience in semi-skilled maintenance or construction work.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within six months of employment (training provided), and an acceptable driving record
Possession of a Grade C water distribution and/or Grade I wastewater collection certification (or ability to obtain within one year of employment)
Class III Asbestos Certification (or ability to obtain within one year of employment)
National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100 and ICS 700 training/certification required (provided)

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
