Town of Amherst, Massachusetts is Hiring a Recreation Instructor (Open Positions: 2) Near Amherst, MA

The Amherst Recreation Department is seeking part-time Recreation Instructors to plan, instruct and lead activities for specific classes.

Job Summary:
The Recreation Instructor is responsible for planning, class instruction, and leading activities for specific classes.
Essential Job Functions:
• Plan, implement, and facilitate recreation programs classes, workshops, or trips.
• Establish and communicate expected conduct to ensure a safe learning environment, enforcing safety rules to prevent injury.
• Explain the rules of the activities and instruct participants at a variety of skill levels.
• Modify activities to suit the needs of specific groups, such as seniors.
• Administer basic first aid if needed.
• Organize and set up tools and equipment used in recreational activities.
• Teach activity participants per lesson plans.
• Maintain close supervision and maximize safety of staff and participants at all times.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with participants.
• Attend appropriate in-service training sessions as required.
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Must be age 18 or older, significant experience in related area of activity. Current certifications in the recreation area as needed. Must pass criminal background checks. Current CPR, AED and First Aid certification preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Flexibility, a positive attitude, enthusiasm and excellent problem-solving skills preferred.
Must have experience as a leader or supervisor of others. Strong background in related area of activity. Ability and desire to interact with participants of all ages in a positive and courteous manner. Ability to teach/ coach participants in a professional manner. Willingness to work according to agency policies and procedures. Demonstrated punctuality and reliability in work habits. Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and safe decision-making skills. Ability to meet the physical demands of the recreation activity.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Job Environment:
Work is generally performed in classroom conditions and potentially outdoors, may require some exposure to weather conditions, and noise levels are moderate to high. Makes regular contacts with children and/or parents, adults, location staff, departmental staff, maintenance professionals, and general public. Most contacts involve an exchange of information, instruction, and providing direction.
Has access to program-oriented confidential information. Errors in judgement and administration could have serious adverse effect on the ability to deliver services, and impact reputation of the program, and may result in significant monetary and/or legal repercussions.
