Lifeguard/Swim Instructor

Come join the Amherst Recreation Aquatics staff for Spring and Summer of 2024! We are looking for swim instruction and lifeguards to assist with pool operations and programming.
Job Summary
The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is responsible for enforcing pool rules and regulations to ensure the safety and supervision of all swimmers, participants, equipment, and the overall facility. They will be heavily involved with the general public, and will assist in many facets of overall pool operation. Amherst Recreation Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching various levels of swimming to children and adults. Swim Instructors are also responsible for the supervision of the participants in their designated learning groups. Instructors will be involved with interacting with the general public, and may be asked to assist in various facets of overall instruction program. Instructors will develop lesson plans and act as the lead teacher and/or assist with swim lessons as assigned by the Aquatics Program Coordinator. Lifeguards will have a current Red Cross Certification in Lifeguard Training, CPR for Professional Rescuers and AED and First Aid training.
Major Duties
• Ensuring the safety and supervision of the participants, equipment and facility.
• Enforcing the rules and regulations as they pertain to the facility and all swimmers.
• Providing courteous professional assistance to the public and maintaining positive public relations.
• Teaches and/or assists with swim lessons.
• Assisting with special events as needed.
• Assisting with regularly scheduled cleaning of pool area, locker rooms and surrounding areas.
• Checking that safety equipment is in correct place and in good working order on a daily basis.
• Wearing designated staff uniform.
• Attend mandatory staff meeting and in-service trainings.
• Performing other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be at least 15 years old. Must be certified in Red Cross (or equivalent) Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED. Must pass water safety skill test. WSI certification is highly desirable. Previous experience working at a pool or beach is preferred. Previous experience teaching swimming lessons is preferred. Must pass the (CORI) history/juvenile record history as well as a Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background checks.
Supervision Received
The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor works under the supervision of the Pool Manager and Aquatics Program Coordinator and in compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
