Tower Federal Credit Union is Hiring an Accountant II Near Laurel, MD

Note: All full-time positions include the option of $0 out-of-pocket premium cost for Employee Only PPO AND exceptionally low premiums for all other PPO coverage levels.

Tower is offering a $1000 Signing/Retaining bonus as of 1/20/2024.

HOURS FOR POSITION: Monday - Friday 8am-4:30pm

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Accountant II, through the application of principles of accounting, is responsible for preparing reconciliations of balance sheet general ledger accounts. Through these reconciliations, identifies and resolves errors and omissions and irregularities to provide Tower Federal Credit Union (TFCU) and its service organizations with accurate accounting records. The position also prepares various internal and regulatory external reports on behalf of TFCU and its service organizations. The Accountant II also processes TFCU’s incoming wire transfers.

Additionally, the Accountant II assumes a lead role when assisting with the development of the Accountant I or working on Department initiatives like software integration and development. There are also many times that the Accountant II assumes lead when collaborating with other lines of business on reconciling differences where there is a lack of understanding within the LOB.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABLILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains the fixed and prepaid asset subsidiary system and properly record depreciation transactions.
  • Compiles various TFCU financial reports reconciles source documentation to the general ledger to provide an accurate accounting of TFCU’s financial position as frequently as needed dependent on the volume and complexity of the activity. This includes making appropriate end of month entries to properly state TFCU’s and its service organizations’ financial position.
  • Monitors flow of credit union transactions from the various supporting systems into and out of the general ledger on a daily basis, and identifies and resolves errors, omissions, and irregularities to provide accurate records for TFCU and its service organizations.
  • Analyzes account reconciliations prepared by account custodians for integrity. Provides guidance to account custodians on proper account reconciliation procedures and assists other departments in resolving accounting issues to ensure accurate presentation of financial data.
  • Prepares regular periodic reports on status of account reconciliations to management. Ensures that reconciliations are submitted within stated deadlines. Informs accounting management of problematic accounts.
  • Participates in the month end close, preparation of board reports, and other regulatory reports. Analyzes and researches general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy of financial data according to accounting policies. Prepares various journal entries that support closing and financial statement presentation.
  • Prepares reports using accounting systems from initial design through analytical review of results.
  • Analyzes and documents accounting procedures and practices.
  • Promotes department efficiency by offering suggestions for improvement.
  • Independently develops procedures in conjunction with accounting processes.
  • Maintain the fixed asset register, research and resolve all discrepancies, and prepare the monthly reconciliation as well as lead schedule for audits without error and Provide guidance to entry level Accountants on useful life of fixed assets in accordance with TFCU policy and IRS guidelines.
  • Serves in a lead role with the Accountant I roles on system issues and department initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance plus 3 years directly related experience or 7 years or related experience in a financial institution.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrates a solid working knowledge of the transaction flow of all accounting processes that affect the general ledger.
  • Prepares error free reconciliation’s of all balance sheet general ledger accounts through the application of principals of accounting to include timely resolution of outstanding items and also be able to create new reconciliations for new general ledgers opened to support new business functions.
  • Proficient with more advanced features of Excel to include complex functions (i.e. Average, round, if/then, link, recording macros).
  • Perform all facets of Property Management accounting to include acting as a liaison between TFCU and property managers on the proper coding of invoices, EOM accounting, and classification of capital assets, quarterly funding, and variance tracking.
  • Provides supporting documents to support annual external audit and NCUA exam.
  • Ability to setup automated balance sheet reconciliations using Prologue Frontier.
  • Proficient at managing all facets of accounting for wholly owned CUSO.
  • Identifies and resolves errors, omissions, and irregularities to provide accurate records for TFCU and its service organizations.
  • Must demonstrate strong independent problem solving skills with research and resolution of discrepancies related to all balance sheet and income statement account general ledgers.
  • Promotes department efficiency by offering suggestions for improvement.
  • Independently develops procedures in conjunction with accounting processes.
    • Maintain the fixed asset register, research and resolve all discrepancies, and prepare the monthly reconciliation as well as lead schedule for audits without error and Provide guidance to entry level Accountants on useful life of fixed assets in accordance with TFCU policy and IRS guidelines.
    • Has knowledge of and adheres to credit union policies and procedures and all regulations related to the Bank Secrecy Act, the USA PATRIOT Act and OFAC.

  • Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
  • Must be able and willing to maintain sensitive and confidential information and equipment. Must be able to safeguards confidential information.
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods and demonstrate sufficient dexterity and vision to operate a variety of office equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Ability to work the hours needed which may extend beyond the defined work schedule when operating conditions dictate.
