TOTE Maritime Alaska LLC is Hiring a Cargo Support Specialist - Night Shift Near Tacoma, WA

TOTE Maritime Alaska, the leader in safe and reliable service to Alaska, is seeking a Night Shift - Cargo Support Specialist to join the team at our Terminal Tacoma office.


In this position you will:

be responsible for providing support to the Cargo Management department on the night side. Position schedule and hours will be Monday through Friday from 2:30PM until 11:00PM. Duties include managing customer relationships, providing excellent customer service by monitoring and accommodating customer needs, creating, and managing bookings, resolving problems, tracking cargo, as well as entering and approving hazardous materials, and coordinating equipment.


Main Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Pre-approve customer’s hazardous shipments per the 49CFR and enter hazardous materials data into the back-office system. Answer questions regarding regulation and stipulations with confidence.
  • Prepare Hazardous documentation for the key partners and vessel crew.
  • Coordinate with operations on terminal capacity issues, prioritizing cargo and providing trailer booking count to assist with planning.
  • Perform the southbound notification and scheduling; coordinate northbound transportation of loads and empties to meet the needs of internal and external customers.
  • Resolve customer, vendor, and various terminal issues at the main gate.
  • Reconcile northbound trailer and vehicle totals after sailing.
  • Provide customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Communicate with customers internally and externally.
  • Assist in assigning and requesting equipment for customers and carrier’s needs.
  • Coordinate transload activities with customers, carriers and transload facility.
  • Coordinate yard activities and requests with key partners.
  • Issue and cancel bookings; set up appointments with customers and vendors.
  • Other tasks and projects as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • One to two years customer service experience, preferably in transportation.
  • DOT 49CFR HazMat Carrier Requirements (Water) preferred.
  • Excellent Customer Service Skills
  • Proficient typing skills with the ability to maintain a high level of speed and accuracy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Good organizational skills,
  • Must be a team player.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.

The salary range is $38,300 – $67,100 with an anticipated hiring range $43,000 - $53,000. Pay will be based on several factors including the candidate’s education, work experience, work location and specific job duties.
