Tony Chocolonely is Hiring an Income and Farming Economics Specialist Near Amsterdam, NH

We are looking for an Income and Farming Economics Specialist to join our Tony’s Open Chain team. The #1 goal is to advance Tony’s Open Chain’s impact initiatives to a globally recognized standard by building resilient and future-proof farming models, while generating tangible benefits for farming households.

In this role, you will be part of team of specialists and lead initiatives that ensure our ‘5 Sourcing Principles approach’ exceeds industry norms and accelerates living income for all farmers. This includes how to inspire young farmers, developing tailored business and investments opportunities, modelling living income drivers, and thinking outside the box to forge the future of farming.

As a leader of a “centre of excellence” under the 5 Sourcing Principles, it is your responsibility to design impactful and innovative programmes setting ambitious benchmarks for stronger farmers and increasing incomes. Collaborating closely with team members and colleagues in West Africa, you will play a pivotal role in raising standards and effecting positive change.

Here’s what you will do:

  • Lead pioneering programs for living income.
  • Develop a robust, long-term strategy for the "center of excellence," aligning with Tony’s Chocolonely's values.
  • Work closely with the West Africa teams to implement programs within our expanding supply chain, with credible approaches that work at scale.
  • Secure external funds, manage budgets, and assess the cost-benefit of interventions to align with the Tony's Open Chain business model.
  • Ensure accountability and forge an evidence-driven, collaborative environment by convening a diverse array of stakeholders, including governments in West Africa, and experts from within and beyond the organisation.
  • Provide clear guidance and mentorship to colleagues and partner cooperatives who are the first-mile implementers of the 5 Sourcing Principles.
  • Utilise your expertise to pilot innovative solutions for successful farming and living income, leveraging data modelling where applicable.
  • Regularly monitor and refine programs, setting high standards for the industry and exceeding best practices.
  • Evaluate income metrics and traceability, ensuring effective implementation and approach.
  • Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics, International Development, or related field, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in similar roles, demonstrating practical skills and proficiency in income and farm economics.
  • Proven track record in designing and implementing living income projects, ideally in cocoa-sourcing regions Ghana & Côte d'Ivoire.
  • Strong capacity to build momentum, share knowledge, and empower others.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and industry-savvy, with a data driven & strategic outlook.
  • Proficiency in English is required; fluency in French is a big plus.
  • We are all about being more in person than apart. This means we offer flexibility but see each other in the Amsterdam office on average 3 days a week. More is fine!
  • Motivated to raise the bar and challenge both yourself and Team Tony's to increase ambition and successfully achieve our mission. Embrace the opportunity to learn from mistakes along the way.
  • Strong belief in Tony's mission and wholeheartedly embody our core values: outspoken, willful, entrepreneurial, and always bringing a smile.
  • Last but not least, you can deal smoothly with the challenges that come with a growing company, and positively contribute to team Tony's performance.
