Titus Farms is Hiring a Veggie/Flower Farm Crew Member Near Leslie, MI

Position Summary

Farming is production work. The work at Titus Farms ranges from greenhouse production, crop planting, weeding, pruning, and harvesting to building and repairing farm infrastructure. Employees are often called upon to do different and sometimes tedious jobs in all kinds of weather.

The farm earns money from what is actually produced and sold.

Since production per hour or day is vital, employees must work quickly and efficiently. Rebecca will do on-the-job training and, often, in the field. It is important to remember that no matter how simple, tedious, or insignificant a task may appear, everything you do is essential to the farm’s overall success.

Crew members will gain experience in the production cycle of the farm and take part in group and individual tasks. This job is for someone who enjoys working outside and doing highly physical labor with like-minded farmers who love organic produce! This position requires someone who can work in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining high-quality standards.

Basic Responsibilities

All employees share in the primary farm tasks listed below. You will spend most of your time with other employees and the owner doing this work:

  • Harvesting
  • Washing, bundling, arranging, counting and packing produce or flowers
  • Weeding by hand or with a machine and hoeing. Some mowing/flailing.
  • Sowing seeds and transplanting vegetables.
  • Cleaning harvest bins, storage containers, and tools. General tidying.
  • Organizing for, sorting, counting for, and packing CSA shares.
  • Attending farmers markets or CSA and all associated duties.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized space.
  • Working as a team to complete all day-to-day operations on the farm.

Minimum Qualifications

No experience is required. We only ask that you desire to learn about farming and approach life with an attitude of constant improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

● 1 season of experience on another production farm or a physically demanding job.

● Experience working on small-scale greenhouse/vegetable farms.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Genuine interest in local, sustainable agriculture and organic farming practices.
  • Ability to work quickly in a high-stress and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work, often repetitively, outdoors in hot, cold, buggy, rainy, and sunny conditions.
  • Strong work ethic with a history of good attendance.
  • Ability to lift/carry at least 50 pounds.
  • Perform physical work in various positions and heights, including bending, stooping, reaching, twisting arms, and body movement.
  • Desire to maintain a clean and healthy work environment for you and those around you.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfort with taking directions and asking questions when confused.
  • Willingness to talk with your coworkers to achieve a goal together.
  • Attention to detail with a focus on quality.
  • Basic math skills.

Schedules/Hours

  • Be advised we work on holidays such as the 4th of July, Labor Day, and Memorial Day.
  • Days off are generally okay, but we ask for as much advance notice as possible.
  • If staying all day, a 30-minute unpaid lunch is taken.
  • Start time ranges from 7:00-9:00 am depending on workload and weather.
  • End time can vary based on your schedule, but it is often 4:00 or 5:00 pm.
  • It is common to work 10-hour days in August/September/October, but generally not more than three days in a row.

  • We will review applications and select candidates for a Zoom or phone interview. Rebecca will verbally decide whether to continue the interview process or part ways.
  • Rebecca will conduct an in-person interview with a trial work session on the farm. The trial work session allows us to evaluate each other while doing real work. We will pay you for the trial work you do.
  • We will decide based on your working interview, previous interview, and references. If you are accepted, you will see an email from Rebecca with an offer letter and the next steps.

Compensation:

  • Part-Time = $12-$15, depending on experience.
  • Full-Time = 35-50 hours per week in peak season, $14-$18, depending on experience
  • “Farmer Food” is available for all employees.
  • After six months of employment: $100 gear stipend, end-of-season bonus, opportunities for continued education & professional development.

Titus Farms grows diversified organic vegetables on approximately 27 acres. We specialize in high-quality, local food and offer customizable CSA shares and extensive “Add-On” Shares. Our farm crew is small, works closely with each other, and is focused on an environment of constant improvement. We strive to communicate clearly so that expectations are known and achievable. We enjoy both our work in the field and the delicious food we produce.
