SavannahTechnical College seeks a part-time, Biology and Chemistry LaboratoryTechnician to assist with preparation of Biology and Chemistry courses at the SavannahCampus. This individual will report to the supervisor of the Biology andChemistry labs in the General Studies Division. The Professional Science Laboratory Technician will be responsible forthe following duties (the list is not intended to be exhaustive):
Assistsinstructors in setting up experiments and equipment for chemistry, and biologylab classes
Ensuringsafe work and learning environment by complying with OSHA regulations forhandling hazardous materials, and follows waste regulations and properprocedures in the disposal of chemicals
Properlysterilizing equipment and cleans glassware using the appropriate solvents andequipment (autoclave)
Maintaininga set of solutions for specific lab activities
Overseeingthe inventory of lab equipment and supplies and maintaining the inventoryspreadsheet
Makingmedia and inoculating media for the microbiology courses
Preparing,setting up and taking down lab exam stations
Responsiblefor setting up, adjusting, calibrating, cleaning, maintaining, repairing andtroubleshooting laboratory equipment
Responsiblefor preparing the lab for a new semester such as, refilling student supplydrawers, cleaning lab coats, etc.
Keepingthe labs clean and organized
MaintainingMSDS notebooks
Preparingchemical solutions and compounds
Troubleshootingexperimentation using techniques, such as microscopy and chromatography
Maintainingthe acids/bases, flammable/corrosives cabinet and fume hoods
Administrativeduties: following up on supply purchases, work orders, making copies ofworksheets or other materials needed for specific labs, receives/confirmsshipments
Minimum Qualifications
Candidatesworking towards a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry with 12 credithours in Biology and/or Chemistry
Abilityto demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
Demonstratedorganizational skills
Demonstratedskills in usage of Microsoft Office Suite.
Abilityto work day and/or evening hours. Typical work schedule is Monday-Thursday.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer candidates who possess a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry or worked in a science lab at least one year.
Experience working in a Microbiology laboratory.
Physical Demands
Responsibilities are typically performed in a lab environment with the employeeintermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling for upto three (3) – four (4) continuous hours at a time. The employee frequently lifts lightweightobjects up to 25LBS. The exposure todirt, dust, chemicals, fumes, and hazardous materials is possible in thelaboratory environment. The ability todistinguish colors and finger dexterity is required.
Salary/BenefitsSalaryis commensurate with education and work experience.
