Job Description:

Operational, financial and personnel management of the Farm at Hokuala facilitates to achieve best-in-class production of produce and fruit as well as service, amenities and farm activities that meet the needs of homeowners and non-resident members and guests of Hokuala including Timbers Kauai. 

Responsibilities

  • Grow and maintain an abundant array of seasonal farm vegetables & fruits as possible best w/ managing budgetary resources
  • Harvesting and Delivery: Inform, and update as necessary, managers of restaurants consuming the produce and fruit grown at farm of harvest and delivery schedule and manage delivery to the restaurants consuming the fruit and produce
  • Manage owners farm produce packages or basket for arrival amenities or upon request
  • Financial/budgetary management: Prepare and execute fiscal year based operational budgets
  • Monitor monthly financial statements/budget reports and make operational adjustments to meet budget targets
  • Develop and monitor key financial indicators to permit timely adjustments to meet targets. Assure initiation fee, dues and monthly billing collections are properly executed
  • Oversee purchases & ordering, inventory management controls and approval of accounts payable
  • Activity & Event Programming: Assist managers in programming elements related to the organic farm which can include but are not limited to educational aspects for varied audiences as well as events for homeowners and guests of the property
  • Conduct tours to our invited owners and guests at the Farm
  • Staff Communications: Create internal communications to keep employees of the resort, community services, real estate, realty, and other interested parties, providing updates on Farm facility operations and activities
  • Executive/Board Reporting: Provide regular club status reporting to the Executive Members of the Hokuala regarding the progress of the applicable facility operations and production reports, etc.
  • Coordinate schedules to make self-available to conduct farm tours in groups small & large including occasionally personal tours w/ owners or special interests, media tours, working with Sales & Marketing, Corporate executives, etc.
  • Prepare owners tree planting sites, ready groundwork, including soil amendments, mulching, and watering for assurance of successful tree growth and longevity
  • Flexible to conduct other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supports the goals and objectives of the Company and in accordance with the Company’s commitment to guest satisfaction. Must have professional, service-oriented attitude always. Maintains regular attendance, adheres to schedule, reports to work on time, well-groomed and wearing a clean uniform.

Essential functions as defined are ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents within this classification. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manage and lead all Farm operations including leading landscaping maintenance teams labor resource of farm and associated areas
  • Excellent organization and planning coordination skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and utilize available resources creatively to complete tasks
  • Plans, organizes, schedules, reviews, and evaluates the work of assigned staff, holds staff members accountable
  • Assistive to developing and leading teams’ implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the department; prepares and manages assigned budget
  • Oversees the selection, training, professional development, and discipline of staff
  • Ensures proper training is conducted on all safety procedures relating to all equipment or hazardous materials
  • Create, train and model service standards that achieve excellent service in all aspects of operations
  • Establish and maintain superior aesthetics of farms landscaping & farm operations, prepare a working budget annually
  • Prepares purchase orders, code bills and return them to accounting
  • Estimates equipment, materials and staff required to perform assigned work; requisitions supplies and equipment and maintains an inventory of regularly used materials
  • Performs skilled craft work as required
  • Coordinates activities with other departments and ensures effective communications through attendance at meetings and communication at regularly held staff meetings
  • Creative builds & design, cultivate and maintain the Farm at Hokuala operation, including maintenance of the Farm ‘s vegetable garden, raised beds, fruit tree orchard and including Farms landscaping maintenance upkeep and scheduled maintenance
  • Conducts basic facilities maintenance of Farm facilities i.e., Farm Container storage, Farm Wildlife cages & coups, Shade House, Farm Hale, Trails Restroom, and coordinates work orders for facilities maintenance, managing resources as needed
  • Familiar with all plant life and seasonal horticultural agronomic maintenance and modifications on the Farm at Hokuala
  • Irrigation Knowledge & familiarity
  • Have working knowledge & maintenance of Landscapes irrigation systems, pump stations & distribution lines and controls
  • Manage water consumption to maximize cost efficiencies of Farm maintenance utilities expense
  • Ensures proper preventative maintenance as needed
  • Strong working knowledge of Hokuala’s Properties federally protected endangered bird species and the Habit Conservation Program (HCP) procedures w/ endangered birds, coordinating project work with HCP staff members, etc.
  • Prepares, issues, prioritizes, and tracks facility and equipment maintenance and repair work orders; maintains accurate records of work performed
  • Carry out reasonable requests by management, which the employee can perform
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment
  • Responsible for supervising all assigned groundskeeping staff or volunteer groups of work tasks & coordinating assignments on the Farm at Hokuala
  • Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, brooms, hoe, sickles, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes and all related gardening & landscaping hand & power tools
  • Ensures proper care, water and nutrients are applied to all flora, fauna, fruits & vegetables including the safe use of organic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders
  • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, or other grounds features. Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth
  • Repairs fences, gates, walls, and walks. Cleans out drainage, grates, inlets, ditches, and culverts
  • Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs, vegetables & fruit trees as directed
  • Attend Timbers Kauai Hokuala monthly safety meetings and actively participate in the meetings as the department representative
  • Conducts workplace safety assessments inspections on job-sites and implements trainings
  • Maintain the department’s OSHA Safety Data Sheets (SDS) conduct training on the handling of work site chemicals
  • Maintain the department’s inventory of personal protection equipment (PPE) Ensures training and proper use of the PPE
  • Works closely with the other management staff to effectively coordinate farming activities

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive knowledge in the use of equipment, materials, methods, plantings, practices, and procedures associated with landscaping and irrigation
  • 4 years supervisory experience required
  • Operate vehicles and powered equipment, such as but not limited to, mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, 1-ton trucks, street sweepers, utility vehicles, golf cars, man lifts, riding lawn mowers, skid-steer loader, back-hoe, chain saws, electric clippers, misc. battery powered tools, sod cutters, pruning saws, pressure washers, rototiller, etc.
  • Ability to read and comprehend documents such as instructions, safety rules, and procedural manuals
  • Proficient use of computer hardware & software, Microsoft Office, Excell, Word
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, customer service and teamwork skills, maintain positive working relationships, promotes a cooperative, courteous, friendly, accommodating, and respectful attitude towards guests and co-workers
  • Must be able to lift, pull and/or push up to 75 pounds at a time, with assistance; 50 pounds at a time without assistance
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, run, walk and crawl
  • Must be able to work weekdays, weekends, nights, and holidays
  • Must be able to work in outdoor environment in an all-weather inclement, 90% outdoors & 10% indoors
  • Must be able to work independently without supervision
  • Available to work holidays, weekends, and evenings
  • Principles, practices and techniques of horticulture, agronomy, landscape design, soil sciences, turf maintenance, agriculture experience
  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone, occasionally where relations may be confrontational or strained
  • Principles and techniques of making effective oral presentations
  • Farm management experience preferred
