SECURITY SERGEANT

REPORTS TO:Security Lieutenant Department: Field Operations
Employment Status: Full Time
SUMMARY DESCRIPTIONUnder supervision of the Security Lieutenant, Security Sergeants perform work in the enforcement of laws, and performance of related activities to prevent, detect, and deter crime, implement Tier One's policing philosophy, protects life and property, and directs activities of Officers on assigned shifts or units. Security Sergeants provide direct supervision to Officers and are responsible for the operation of their assigned shifts/units. Interact with other public safety agencies, resident, and community groups, or support agencies following established Tier One Holdings, LLC Operations procedures under supervision. Serve as one of the primary sources of information for Tier One staff and board members related to the company’s performance in the field. Assist senior officers in the development of internal policies, procedures, and practices. In addition to unit management responsibilities, Security Sergeants maintain required certification as Texas Commissioned Security Officers and are able to respond to any security action as well as perform all Security Officer functions.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIESThe following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.Provide Leadership and Supervision of Assigned Unit (60%):

  1. Serve as first level supervisor for an assigned shift/functional unit.
  2. Ensure all activities of assigned section or shift are conducted in accordance with applicable property, local, state, and federal laws and company policy.
  3. Monitor calls for service; ensure they are answered and handled appropriately in a timely manner.
  4. Review all required federal, state, local, and property reports for content, accuracy, and compliance with company reporting standards.
  5. Supervise and direct Officers and activities on assigned shift/functional unit; conduct directed and/or random personnel and equipment inspections.
  6. Prepare, process, and maintain a variety of written reports and records pertaining to assigned activities including daily activity reports and intelligence-based products.
  7. Review incident reports, required forms, records, and related documents prepared by subordinates to ensure accuracy and timely completion; correct or instruct officers to make corrections.
  8. Interpret, convey, and ensure implementation of Tier One policies, procedures, and methods; ensure that personnel have clear guidelines of authority and responsibility.
  9. Monitor and evaluate performance of assigned personnel; conduct performance evaluations, provide counseling, mentoring, and recommend disciplinary actions as necessary.
  10. Promote and ensure proper employee training and compliance with all company requirements.
  11. Ensure all equipment, materials, and work conditions are adequately maintained to prevent accidents.
  12. Complete work in accordance with company and contractual policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Perform Administrative Duties (25%):
  1. Provide a full range of administrative support to management staff; conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations, and operational studies; recommend modifications to programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate; prepare operational drafts of policies and procedures; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  2. Prepare routine reports, establish goals, and objectives, investigating complaints, accurately disseminating information to Officers from higher ranking officers.
  3. Review and prepare biweekly scheduling and time reporting; review and approve time off requests; maintain accurate tracking of all individual sick time, FMLA, and other time demands.
  4. Ensure materials needed for shift/unit operations are available to their personnel, conduct inspections on vehicles and other equipment in accordance with company policy and SOPs.
Perform Information Operations for Assigned Unit (5%)
  1. Perform collection, analysis, exploitation, reporting, and dissemination operations of information of potential intelligence value on locations, personnel, and activities from area of responsibility.
  2. Prepare specialized reports for dissemination to contract holders, outside agencies, various law enforcement entities, and others. Author presentations relative to Tier One Communities goals and objectives.
  3. Review, manage, and approve requests for information from outside agencies.
Act as Liaison between Tier One and Community (10%)
  1. Maintain contact with residents, guests, and civic and community groups within the assigned geographic areas in order to promote the goals and mission of Tier One Communities, encourage Tier One Tip Line reporting, and generate involvement and input from the public to reduce crime, promote safety, and establish mutual trust and cooperation.
  2. Maintain positive contact with all owners, managers, employees, and other stakeholders within the assigned geographic areas in order to promote cooperation and free flow of information, affect property specific violation notifications, support law enforcement operations, and meet contractual obligations.
All other duties and responsibilities as required.QUALIFICATIONSThe following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.Knowledge of the following:
  • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Methods and techniques used in providing the full range of security and crime prevention services and activities including investigation and identification, search and seizure, care and custody of persons and property, and crime prevention.
  • Techniques and applications of self-defense and proper use of force
  • Recent court decisions and how they affect security operations.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations including laws governing the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons accused of felonies, misdemeanors, and petty offenses.
  • Functions and objectives of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
  • Rules of evidence pertaining to search, seizure, and preservation.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:

  • Prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence.
  • Accurately observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places.
  • Control violent people and affect detentions.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Operate specialized security/law enforcement equipment including specialized vehicles, radios, video systems.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines:Education/Training:Two years of college level course work that includes criminology, criminal justice, business administration, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree is preferred or equivalent experience. Experience:Must have at least Four years of increasingly responsible work experience as a Texas Commissioned Security Officer, including at least two years of administrative and supervisory experience; service in the U.S. Military for a period of at least six years, including at least two years as a Non-Commissioned Officer or Junior Officer; or other work experience that demonstrates a general aptitude for security management work.License or Certificate:Possession of an appropriate, valid driver’s licensePossession of a current Texas Commissioned Security Officer Certificate and Pocket CardPossession of CPR, First Aid, and Narcan certificationsPrevious satisfactory employment as a Security Sergeant and/or Field Training OfficerPossession of a current Texas Classroom and/or Firearms Instructor Certificate and Pocket Card is desirablePhysical Demands and Working Environment:These conditions are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Environment:

Work is performed between a standard office environment and a reactive emergency, natural or man-made disaster, and routine security maintaining environments with travel from site to site. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration; potentially hostile environments; extensive public contact. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be very loud due to sirens, firearms, etc. Incumbents required to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends, and may be required to travel to various locations in order to meet contractual obligations.

Physical:Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a security/law enforcement setting and an office setting; restrain or subdue individuals; walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; operate office equipment including use of computer keyboard; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and finger; ability to speak and hear to exchange information; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various locations; ability to operate and use specialized security/law enforcement tools and equipment including guns and handcuffs.Vision:
