TidewaterStaffing.com is Hiring an Environmental Health and Safety Inspector Near Newport, VA

Tidewater staffing is currently seeking Environmental Health and Safety Inspectors for work located in Newport News, VA.
The ESH Inspector is an experienced-level position. As an experienced-level inspector, the employee performs a full range of Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) assignments in a full-functioning capacity. The position will work closely with the ESH Manager and Director and will interface with Project Management Teams and assigned supervision, in improving the safety program and enhancing safety awareness. Has the ability to influence and recommend modifying existing protocols. This position may require overtime, in addition to, work on weekends and holidays. This position does not have regular hours or shift work and employee may be asked to start a shift several hours earlier than the oncoming shift.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to perform atmospheric testing and space inspections, when needed, to determine if the area is safe for workers and/or hot work.
  • Conducts various ESH training to support company programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Actively promotes and enforces all company environmental, health and safety standards.
  • Participates in production meetings to discuss workplace safety and regulatory concerns.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with the Project Management Team and employees.
  • Conducts daily ESH inspections/ audits to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, company environmental, health, and safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Investigate accidents to ascertain the root cause and use the findings to recommend future preventive safety measures and to aid in developing a better safety program.
  • Prepare finding reports with recommendations for corrective action.
  • Provides guidance to personnel regarding rules, guidelines, and issues related to safety and health programs and practices.
  • Practices safe working techniques and re-enforces the safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by the Company.
  • Operate, maintain, certify, inspect, calibrate and oversee installation of safety equipment.
  • Records data, writes reports, and compiles information necessary for statistical reports and analyses to include root cause analysis and solutions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum required education: High School diploma/GED, with 2 years of experience in a shipyard environment. Required certifications: Current OSHA Maritime 10-Hour or 30-Hour training, Initial and annual 8-hour update for Shipyard Competent Person training. Additional training will be provided upon hiring. Shipboard experience is required.
  • Prefer 2 years of experience in ship repair industry preferably in a safety position.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Have completed NAVSEA required course: OSHA 521, 3095, 3115, and 5410.
  • Ability to train employees on company safety policy and procedure.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
  • Must be able to gain access to military installations.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have completed Shipyard Competent Person course (Provide proof of initial and annual 8-hour update).
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and hazards; with ability to execute them.
  • Knowledge of shipboard navigation and nomenclature.
  • Ability to perform work with limited or no supervision.
  • Must be able to climb ladder wells, enter tanks/voids and other confined spaces and take direction from superiors.
  • Must be tank/void watch and Firewatch qualified.
  • Must be able to traverse multiple classes of U.S. Navy warships to include ladder wells, tight compartments, tanks, voids, bilges and heights exceeding 4’.
  • Candidate must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with employees, management, customers and subcontractors.
  • Perform evaluation and testing in various environments including but not limited to noise, illumination, atmospheric conditions (confined spaces), ensuring proper working environments are established and maintained.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk-thru, you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders, and bending or stooping thru tight spaces, in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery. There may be the occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds. Work conditions vary from indoors to outdoors, very hot to very cold.
  • Requires walking, reaching, sitting and concentration in the presence of occasional and loud noises.
  • Able to move in narrow and restricted passageways, up/down steep and narrow ladders or stairways, and up and down antenna masts/yardarms (onboard ships).
  • Able to lift, carry and move objects up to 50 lbs. in weight.
  • Must have manual and finger dexterity; able to grasp, manipulate, assemble small objects.
  • Able to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  • Able to perceive and distinguish normal range of colors.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and steel-toe boots.
  • Ability to walk, sit and stand for long periods of time.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position works on the job site and in an office environment. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals, smoke, and extreme temperatures. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced fabrication/shipyard setting with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity in the facility.20% office environment, 80% of time spent in production areas in facility. While in production areas the person will be exposed to all weather conditions, noise, fumes, dusts and odors.
