Thurston County Food Bank is Hiring a KIWANIS SEASONAL GARDEN HIRE - GLEANING Near Tumwater, WA

THIS TEMPORARY POSITION

IS FOR THE JUNE THROUGH AUGUST PORTION OF OUR GROWING SEASON

SUMMARY:

This three-month temporary position is responsible for supporting the management of the Thurston County Food Bank’s (TCFB) collaborative project Olympia Kiwanis Food Bank Gardens (OKFBG) and TCFB’s Gleaning Program.

Primary responsibilities for supporting the OKFBG include: Tasks required to operate a small-scale vegetable farm including; soil preparation, tool use and maintenance, irrigation set-up and maintenance, field sowing, greenhouse tasks, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and post-harvest handling and delivery in addition to volunteer recruitment and coordination. Garden staff will also have the opportunity to learn about irrigation, seed varieties, and other farming skills.

Gleaning responsibilities include 12 hours/week picking up and harvesting produce for farms and delivering for TCFB Food Pantries. Assisting with community fruit tree glean. Packaging and processing gleaned produce for TCFB clients.

This staff member will play a key role in supporting staff and volunteers in hunger relief by increasing food access, quality, and quantity.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities): 

  • Under supervision, and appropriate training will see produce from field production to Food Bank deliver.
  • Learn all aspects of procurement processes including equipment training, safety protocols, communication, and understanding of roles of staff.
  • Supervise volunteer staff, assign tasks, resolve conflicts, and elicit positive feedback.
  • Train and orient volunteer staff on Federal, State, and local program standards, job requirements, philosophy, and mission of the Food Bank.
  • Provide backup as needed to volunteers and program staff.
  • Serve as an active Food Bank staff member, including participation in meetings, training, fundraising efforts, and other planned activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:

  • Farm or Garden experience.
  • Willingness to work outside in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work with individuals of varying socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers.
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to interpret and carry out Federal, State, and local program standards.
  • Ability to understand and apply the philosophy and mission of the Thurston County Food Bank.
  • Knowledge of food management practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of the needs of our client base.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Washington State Driver’s License and reliable transportation to be used on the job.

  • Food Handler’s permit or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

COMPUTER/TECHNOLOGY SKILLS/EQUIPMENT/SOFTWARE SKILLS:

  • Computer literacy includes the use of word processing, database, and spreadsheet software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Occasional travel by automobile is required for position responsibilities and/or training.
  • Manual dexterity and physical ability to perform tasks in varying weather (i.e. repeated living up to 50 pounds, continual standing, reaching, bending, and walking).

  • Salary: $22.63 per hour
  • Benefits: THIS 90 DAY TEMPORARY POSITION IS NOT BENEFITS ELIGIBLE
