Three Rivers Community Schools is Hiring a Paraprofessional-Special Education Classroom Support Near Three Rivers, MI

Position Type: Union-SEIU, Paraprofessional-Special Education Classroom Support

Available: 23-24 Academic Year

Building: Three Rivers Middle School

Reports to: Building Principal

Purpose:

Work under the direct supervision of certified staff to maintain a safe and healthy educational environment; to assist/support students with personal care activities and appropriate social behaviors; and to assist staff in reinforcing selected student educational and therapy activities.

Professional Qualifications:

Must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or
  2. An associate's degree (or higher); or
  3. A high school diploma (or the equivalent) with the ability to meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through the passage of an approved formal state academic assessment within 30 working days of hire.
    1. The State Board of Education approved the following formal assessments by which a paraprofessional may choose to demonstrate this knowledge:
      1. Basic Skills Examination: A passing score on the score Basic Skills Test MTTC
      2. A passing score of at least 480 on the evidence-based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Test or Professional Readiness Exam.
      3. Other basic skills examination options: ETS Parapro Assessment- a passing score of 460 is required

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

(These duties and responsibilities are judged to be "essential functions" in terms of the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA)

  1. Takes direction from teachers, instructional coaches, and administration in working with special education students who require additional support in the education environment.
  2. Provide instructional and behavioral support as needed
  3. Collaborate with staff, students and parents to maintain a safe and productive learning environment
  4. Maintains disciplinary control of assigned students
  5. Is organized, self-directed and flexible to work with varied schedules and individual needs
  6. Possesses the ability to communicate professionally, both orally and in writing
  7. Assumes responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development through such efforts as reading professional journals and other publications
  8. Attends meetings as required
  9. Maintains high academic standards and expectations
  10. Represents the school district in a positive manner
  11. Knows and follows school district policy and chain of command
  12. Regular & reliable attendance
  13. Performs other related duties which may be assigned by the referring teacher, instructional coach, and/or principal

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit; occasionally walk and stand and reach with hands and arms; occasionally lift and carry up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; very good depth perception; and the ability to communicate through speech. The position requires a moderate amount of physical activity.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside and regularly meets deadlines with severe time constraints.

Terms of Employment: 180 days. Monday-Friday. This position generally follows the TRCS Academic Calendar. This position has non-working days during winter, spring and summer breaks as well as designated holidays. Salary, terms and other conditions of employment established by SEIU Local 517M Master Agreement.
