JOB TITLE: Charge Nurse

REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

During the day shift, the charge nurse is under the direction of the Director of Nursing or in her absence, the Assistant Director of Nursing, or any designee. The evening and night shift charge nurse is under direct supervision of the Supervisor or a designee. The charge nurse is responsible for total resident care of the designated group of resident as assigned by the Supervisor. He/She is responsible for the application of Nursing principles in initiating, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating resident care plans. Sound judgment is required to recognize and take appropriate action regarding significant changes in residents conditions. The charge nurse is to be in full control of the subordinate personnel within the assigned area. Delegation of duties are made so that assignments are carried out in a safe, efficient, and adequately supervised manner. As a professional, established policies, procedures, and physician orders are carried out in the aim of providing quality care.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an approved school of nursing and holding a current Michigan nursing license.
  • Experience in Medical-Surgical nursing desirable.
  • Evidence of good physical and mental health.
  • Qualities of leadership.
  • Sincere desire to work in geriatrics and people with chronic diseases.
  • Ability to make sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
  • Conduct self at all times so as to reflect credit on nursing profession.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Environment - well lighted, exposed to infections, contagious diseases, and odors.
  • Stand and walk most of shift. Sit intermittently.
  • Lift and transport residents and equipment.
  • Frequent visitor and public contact.
  • Variable daily routine according to resident, staff, and visitor needs.

DUTIES

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing and/or the Supervisor, provides for comprehensive nursing care of the designated resident area by assisting in planning, directing, and coordinating nursing care. Initiate and update resident care plans as needed.
  • Performs various direct resident care duties, such as making periodic resident rounds, assisting the physician with the examination and treatment of the resident, administering medication and treatments, prescribed by the attending physician, health teaching of residents and families, and other miscellaneous duties as required.
  • Performs various resident care duties, such as accurate charting, and reporting of the condition and care of residents, and public relations.
  • Assists in supervising Nursing personnel, relays necessary information to subordinates - keeping them informed regarding changes. Instructs nursing personnel in proper nursing techniques and utilizations of equipment, assist with orientation of new employees, directs and evaluates activities of subordinates.
  • Assists in evaluation of personnel by writing anecdotal notes and by conference with the Supervisor and/or Director of Nursing.
  • Establish priorities in meeting needs of the residents, visitors, staff, and the public. Ascertains the effect of family, personnel, and personal experiences on the residents. Recognize throughout the importance of the Nurse-Resident relationship, establishing open channels of communication.
  • Utilize problem-solving techniques to individualize resident care planning.
  • Responds appropriately to environmental and safety hazards whether related to the physical setting, equipment, and/or actions of others.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must be able to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable of current nursing practices in long term medicine.
  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., the appearance of areas, and must perform regular inspections of nursing unit areas for sanitation, order, safety, and proper performance of assigned duties.
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of their individuals in the workplace.
  • Must follow nursing uniform standards.
  • Must be able to handle prolonged standing, bending, and turning.
  • Must be able to handle repetitive motion.
