Job Summary

The Specialty Lead Registered Nurse independently performs job duties utilizing Surgical skills and knowledge, in accordance with policies and procedures of the hospital and professional standards of care in order to provide safe and effective patient care.

The Specialty Lead Registered Nurse:

• Under the supervision of the Manager/Director, assists in the planning, developing, implementation and evaluation of neurosurgical procedures that promotes safety and well-being of all patients throughout the surgical procedure on assigned tour of duty.
• Is responsible for all activities within the Surgical Services Department related to neurosurgical specialty.
• Identifies and addresses issues relating to Joint Commission and other applicable federal, state and local regulatory and/or accrediting agencies related to neurosurgical specialty.
• Is responsible for the evaluation of requests related to new procedures education and implementation.
• Maintains open communication with all customers.
• Requires a strong knowledge of all surgical procedures with emphasis on neurosurgical specialty.
• Exhibits exceptional leadership and critical thinking abilities.
• Promotes an environment in which all team members can work cooperatively.
• Works in collaboration with the Inventory Specialty Staff and Surgical Services Service Line Director.
• Plans and implements an education plan related to neurosurgical procedures. Ensures all staff involved in patient care from pre-operative setting to discharge are educated on care of neurosurgical patients.
• Provides educational in-services as needed to surgical services and nursing units on care of neurosurgical patients.
• Works in the Circulating RN role as assigned.

Education

Graduate of a Registered Nursing program. B.S.N preferred.

Licensure

Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of WV.

Experience

Three years of Circulating RN experience required. Minimum of two years of experience in neurosurgical procedures required.

Teaching experience utilizing adult learning principles desired. Previous experience with Quality

Improvement activities preferred. Previous experience with materials management and preference card management preferred.

Certification

Healthcare BLS validation required within 60 days of employment, with revalidation per AHA guidelines thereafter. Certification in specialty preferred such as CNOR. ACLS preferred within one year of employment and maintained thereafter per AHA guidelines.

Computer/Typing/Math Skills

Experience with computers is required. Basic working knowledge including but not limited to EMR, Outlook, Materials Ordering System, Word and Excel is preferred. Ability to perform mathematical calculations, balance and reconcile figures is required.

Agrees to abide by the Saint Francis Hospital implementation plans for the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals. Provides feedback concerning any patient safety issues identified within the hospital.
• VAT member or participation in projects involving Materials Management.
