Thomas Health System is Hiring a Coding Specialist Near South Charleston, WV

  • JOB SUMMARY
      Reviews the medical record to assign accurate, appropriate diagnostic and procedural information for accurate DRG/MS-DRG or APC assignment, maintaining a minimum of 91% accuracy rate, per policy. Selects and sequences diagnosis and procedures, identifies conditions that can affect payment, and assigns optimum DRG or APC in accordance with the latest HCFA/CMS/Coding regulations. Interfaces accurate code assignments to the appropriate account number and verifies accurate interfaced data.
  • EDUCATION
    • Must have college level classes in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, basic disease processes, coding mechanisms, coding guidelines and conventions and Peer Review Organization guidelines.
  • LICENSURE
    • The RHIT-eligible employee will be provided a time frame of one year from the date of hire for training and is expected to successfully complete the AHIMA Registered Health Information Technician exam within this time frame.
      • If the employee takes the exam and does not successfully complete the exam, one additional six month period of time will be provided for a second attempt.
      • Should the employee not achieve the AHIMA credential of Registered Health Information Technician, within 18 months of hire/transfer, continued employment will be subject to availability of other open positions that the employee is qualified for.
    • A Certified Procedural Coder - CPC - with the required experience will be considered based on the stipulation below:
    • Should the employee not achieve the AHIMA credential of Registered Health Information Technician or Certified Coding Specialist within 18 months of hire/transfer, continued employment would not be guaranteed. Candidate would be able to apply for open position in which they meet the requirements.

  • EXPERIENCE
    • Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician or RHIT-eligible, Certified Coding Specialist or Registered Nurse with current acute care hospital coding experience required.
    • Must have a thorough knowledge of the Prospective Payment systems and DRG optimization.
    • Two to five years current acut ecare hospital coding experience highly preferred.
  • CERTIFICATION
    • N/A
  • COMPUTER/TYPING/MATH SKILLS
    • Basic computer skills required.
  • JOB SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
    • Strong communication skills are needed to convey coding conventions to medical staff , via verbal or written physician queries.
    • Must be able to verbally communicate with physicians and the physician offices and staff.
    • Basic problem solving skills required.
