Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Day Program Supervisors, the Consumer Assistant shall be responsible for facilitating the safe and timely transportation of consumers to and from our Day Program and provide direct supervision of consumers during Day Program. Consumer Assistants will participate in and executing activities of daily living and active treatment in the Day Program, engaging consumers by using various levels of prompting techniques, encouraging consumer participation in all aspects of programming, supervising consumers ongoing throughout the shift, and participating in pool/Jacuzzi activities (as assigned), various other duties as listed below.

Job Responsibilities:
· Provide Consumer transportation to and from Day Program.
o Safe Transportation: Safely operate designated vehicles to transport consumers to and from the Day Program, adhering to all traffic laws and safety regulations.
o Schedule Management: Develop and maintain an efficient transportation schedule, ensuring punctual arrivals and departures to optimize the overall program timetable.
o Communication: Establish effective communication with consumers to provide necessary transportation information, address concerns, and ensure a positive experience.
o Vehicle Maintenance: Conduct regular vehicle inspections, perform routine maintenance checks, and report any issues promptly. Coordinate with the maintenance team to ensure the fleet's reliability and safety.
o Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of daily transportation activities, including mileage, fuel consumption, and consumer attendance. Submit required reports to the appropriate department as needed.
o Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency procedures for transportation situations, providing guidance to consumers and staff in case of unforeseen events.
o Customer Service: Foster a positive and respectful environment during transportation, addressing consumer needs and concerns professionally. Collaborate with other staff members to enhance the overall consumer experience.
· Provide training, teaching, and direct supervision of consumers.
o Assist and positively interact with consumers in a Day Program setting with training/acquiring skills in the following areas: grooming/hygiene and self-care including feeding and toilet training; fine motor skills; gross motor skills; sensory exploration including tactile, auditory, oral-motor and general help in any classroom assigned to.
o Learn and implement all consumers’ behavioral intervention plans.
o Learn the diets for the each consumers’ special dietary needs using cooking equipment and preparing meals following the dietician’s guidelines for proper food safety protocols.
o Assist with behavioral problems as they arise with any consumer as appropriate.
o Complete delegated nursing tasks in accordance with nursing protocols, specified training, and regulatory requirements; to include: medication passing, g-tube feeding and catheters’ maintenance.
o Learn and assist in reinforcing consumers’ orientation and mobility training.
o Assist consumers when needed, even if they are not your assigned consumer.
o Know duties and assignments for the shift’s activities.
· Ensure all required documentation and Incident Reports are completed within TLC protocols and regulatory guidelines.
· Assist with implementing meaningful activities/projects for consumers.
o Ensure activities are age-appropriate.
o Provide hand over hand assistance, adaptive equipment, verbal prompts and redirection to ensure participation.
o Encourage consumer participation in all aspects of active treatment.
o Engage and interact with consumers in their Activities of Daily Living throughout each shift.
o Engage consumers by using appropriate levels of prompting techniques.
o Accompany consumers on community outings/activities (which may involve driving an agency vehicle). Driving an agency vehicle requires an agency driving test, a driver’s license, and an acceptable driving record.
Qualifications:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position is primarily in a temperature controlled vehicle/day program/house. Several times a week there are outside activities and therefore the working conditions are subject to weather elements, i.e. sun, wind, rain. Occasional driving of consumers is required including assisting them into and out of agency vehicle(s) for community outings and supervising consumers’ safety while in the community. Several times a week, there are pool activities that require getting into an enclosed, heated swimming pool and/or Jacuzzi. This position can be moderately physical. There is frequent standing, bending, sitting for periods of time, and fast-paced walking. Assisting consumers in wheelchairs, with walkers, gait-belts that require pushing, supporting and guiding. Frequent lifting of weight that varies between 10-100 pounds. On occasion, consumers may become physical including but not limited to hitting, hair pulling, kicking, grabbing, and biting.
Frequently, you are exposed to consumers’ bodily fluids which can include saliva (drool), blood, urine, fecal matter. Stringent Universal Health Precautions are practiced.
