Job Title : Supervisor, Machining, 3rd Shift

Summary:
Directs and coordinates activities of 3rd shift Machining personnel. Checks 1st pc & spot checks in process work to ensure high quality product. Ensures that work is performed safely, efficiently, and effectively, according to the daily dispatch list for each work center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Employee supervision and control (coaching and training).
  • Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
  • Evaluates written data such as job orders, products specifications, and operations sheets.
  • Confers with production personnel to resolve problems affecting production schedules.
  • Issues written and verbal instructions.
  • Assigns duties and examines work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
  • Monitors and corrects labor variances.
  • Studies dispatch lists and coordinates hourly requirements for completion of job assignments.
  • Interprets specifications, blueprints, and job orders to workers and assigns duties.
  • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performances, and quality of product.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of department, or work crew.
  • Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Maintains time and production records and maintains indirect labor within budgets.
  • Responsible for the quality of department processes.
  • Confers with other supervisors to coordinate activities of individual departments / shifts.
  • Reports machine and equipment malfunctions to maintenance personnel.
  • Ensures that all employees are adequately trained to perform assigned work in a safe, efficient, high quality manner.
  • Works with individual employees to help them become more efficient and productive.
  • Relentlessly investigates all rejections to implement corrective actions at the root cause level.
  • Enforces company policies and procedures, including but not limited to: start time, breaks, quit time, smoking policy, safety and security practices and policies, company's ISO-9001 rated quality system, accurate and efficient timekeeping.
  • Ensures that production schedules are met.
  • Hire, transfer or otherwise disposition employees to ensure capacity is balanced with customer demand and load.
  • Alerts human resources as soon as possible regarding personnel needs - hiring, transfers, etc.
  • Ensures appropriate level of cross-training to be ready to support varrying demands and schedules.
  • Schedules overtime as necessary to expend capacity to meet demand; maintains control to ensure that no employee works excessive overtime unless pre-approved by the director of operations.
  • Develops and/or evaluations appropriate operating and financial metrics and measurements to understand the department's current performance and implements appropriate actions and programs/processes to drive improvements.
  • Ensures that equipment, tooling, carts, and other assets in the department are well-maintained and appropriately set up to promote efficient manufacturing and flow.
  • Performs inspection checks (both 1st pc & in process) using established processes and procedures.
  • Investigates non-conforming product issues to determine root cause and follows established procedures for disposition.
  • Works closely with the Quality group in measuring and testing product.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises 1 to 25 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. It is desirable but not required for the supervisor to have training and expertise in the area supervised (e.g., machining, sheet metal, etc.) Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
Experience:
3-5 years Machining and Quality experience. CNC programming experience would be a plus.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and column. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of the company's manufacturing software, ERP and planning systems, along with functional knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
