Job Description
Job Title: Intern, General Machinist
Grade:

SUMMARY
Sets up and operates variety of milling machines and/or lathes to mill flat or curved surfaces on metal work pieces such as machine, tool, or die parts by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
  • 10% - Studies blueprints or layout on work piece to determine sequence of operations and finished dimensions of work piece.
  • 50% - Lifts and positions work piece on machine table and secures it.
  • 10% - Selects feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut, and milling cutter.
  • 10% - Mounts milling cutter in spindle, and positions cutter and work piece in relation to each other.
  • 10% - Verifies alignment of work piece.
  • Included - Turns hand wheel to feed work piece to cutter or vice versa.
  • Included - Turns valve handle to start flow of coolant or lubricant on work area, starts machine, and engages automatic feed.
  • Included - Computes indexing ratios and sets up and operates dividing head to index work piece for such operations as milling helical cuts.
  • 10% - Mounts different tool in place of cutter and performs other operations such as drilling and boring.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Intern must be a machining student and/or have six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
