First Grade Primary Teacher

Job Summary

The First Grade Primary Teacher reports directly to the Head of School. This position is responsible for developing lesson plans; delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding student progress and the instructional program, among other related responsibilities.

The First Grade Primary Teacher will seek to model the school’s philosophy of education through instruction and example, and provide lessons that meet the school’s requirements as well as students’ interests and capabilities. The First Grade Primary Teacher will take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, facilities, and keep accurate records.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Report to work by 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and leave between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m., pending staff meetings, parent meetings, and classroom prep

  • Attend and help facilitate five Saturday school days throughout the academic year

  • Create and/or implement the school’s recommended curriculum

  • Plan and execute daily lessons

  • Communicate with parents about student progress, achievements, and expectations. In a classroom of 10 to 15 students, create a developmentally appropriate, positive, and inclusive culture that cultivates motivation and enthusiasm for and growth in learning

  • Differentiate instruction based on student level

  • Maintain records of student work, student progress, and attendance

  • Create progress reports and report cards

  • Collaborate with Academic Support and Specials teachers (Art, Music, Handwork, and Physical Activity)

  • Monitor students in a variety of educational settings(e.g. classroom, cafeteria, playground, restrooms, field trips, etc.) Handle social, emotional, and behavioral issues as they arise

  • Procure materials for the classroom

  • Report safety and wellness incidents to maintain students’ personal safety and adhere to state law

  • Meet with students and parents to discuss education-related issues

  • Work to be an example of and promote healthy interpersonal relationships with coworkers and students

  • Prepare for assigned classes and provide lessons at designated times

  • Integrate suitable use of technology

  • Plan and supervise assignments and activities for teacher assistants and volunteers as required

Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in elementary school education or similar, Master’s degree preferred

  • Proficient knowledge of teaching strategies and methods

  • At least 5 to 10 years of experience in a school or youth-serving organization

  • Outstanding organizational skills

  • Proficient computer skills

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Availability to work extended hours on occasion

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with a professional and empathetic approach

  • Able to work well collaboratively

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Detail-oriented

  • High-energy and enthusiastic about working in an academic atmosphere

  • Self-starter
