Cafe Attendant Job Description

The Waterfront Cafe Attendant’s primary responsibility is to provide excellent customer service, create a welcoming atmosphere, and ensure that patrons have a positive experience at The Waterfront Cafe. They should also have a working knowledge for coffee preparation techniques, be adept at checking patrons out accurately and efficiently, as well as possess multitasking skills and be able to handle a fast-paced work environment.

• Ability to be on foot for majority of shift time

Job Duties/Tasks

Customer Service

• Greet customers in a welcoming manner
• Accurately take customer orders, answer questions about the menu, make recommendations
• Handle customer complaints or concerns professionally, and address them to the best of your ability

Food & Beverage Preparation

• Prepare and serve a variety of espresso, coffee, tea, and smoothie drinks
• Operate espresso machine and other equipment
• Prepare in-house grab n’ go cooler items, as well as made to order items including salads, grain bowls, acai bowls, chia pudding, toast and bagels, and wraps
• Maintain quality standards in the preparation and presentation of menu items

Cash Handling and Point of Sale System

• Ring up customer orders using Clover POS system
• Handle cash, credit card, and mobile payment transactions accurately, give accurate change
• Reconcile cash register and sales at the beginning and end of shifts, report discrepancies to management

Cafe Maintenance

• Keep the cafe clean and tidy by keeping up with regular cleaning of tables, countertops, kitchen surfaces & equipment, as well as dish washing
• Restock and organize supplies in the front and back of the house
• Monitor and maintain equipment throughout cafe to ensure they are in good working order and report any maintenance or equipment issues to the manager

Knowledge of Menu & Specials

• Stay informed about the cafe’s menu, including daily specials, seasonal offerings, where and who our ingredients are sourced from, as well as the health benefits of certain menu offerings
• Educate customers about different coffee, tea, and smoothie options and suggest pairings with food items on the menu

Compliance with Health & Safety Regulations

• Ensure that the cafe operates in compliance with health and safety regulations and sanitation standards of the Tompkins County Whole Health Department
• Follow proper food safety procedures to prevent contamination and ensure food quality
• Maintain a clean and hygienic work environment and appearance

Communication & Teamwork

• Collaborate with cafe staff and management to ensure smooth operation
• Communicate effectively with colleagues and management to address issues or coordinate tasks

Upselling & Customer Engagement

• Suggest menu upsells and retail items to increase customer sales
• Engage with customers in a friendly and personable manner, build rapport with a loyal customer base, and foster a sense of community well being

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00 per hour

Expected hours: 15 – 20 per week
