Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking an accomplished and creative journalist to serve as deputy editor of the investigative unit’s long-term reporting team. This editor will help lead an award-winning group of talented journalists to carry forward The Post’s legacy of holding powerful institutions to account through revelatory stories on topics of the greatest public importance.
This job requires a demonstrated record of journalistic excellence and the ability to produce high-stakes investigations in a competitive, yet collaborative, environment. Strong conceptual and line-editing skills are a must, as is the ability to partner across desks and digital platforms to convey investigative findings in visually powerful mediums that deeply engage audiences with maximum impact. This editor should have a passion for mission-driven journalism and an instinct for identifying story ideas and reporting targets that will be of urgent interest to readers.
While investigative experience is a significant advantage for any applicant, we will consider candidates with nontraditional backgrounds who have a record of shepherding outstanding journalism.
Responsibilities:
  • Identify the most relevant and ambitious investigative stories in collaboration with other editors.
  • Guide reporters to execute stories with the greatest degree of sophistication and refinement. Make complex sourcing decisions with the highest ethical standards.
  • Maintain rigor and excellence in story selection and framing.
  • Tell stories in the most innovative ways to expose new audiences to Post investigations.
  • Collaborate closely with other journalists across the newsroom.
  • Foster a supportive, empathetic work culture that furthers staff development and sets high expectations for achievement.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Five years or more of editing experience, including management and leadership of a team of reporters.
  • A demonstrated record of revelatory, high-impact investigative or accountability reporting as an editor or reporter.
  • Experience telling stories through video, data, audio and other mediums.
  • The ability to bring clarity and insight to deeply complex subjects.
  • A deep understanding of the challenges inherent to investigative reporting, and how to rise above them. Knowledge of open records and libel laws.
  • Dynamic management skills, including a collegial, collaborative spirit and a strong and respectful communication style.
This position is based in our Washington newsroom.
Interested candidates should upload a cover letter outlining their qualifications and vision for the role, along with a résumé and three clips, to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by Apr. 5 will be prioritized. The cover letter should be addressed to Long-term Investigations Editor David Fallis, Investigations Editor Peter Wallsten and Managing Editor Matea Gold.
