Salary

Salary: up to $185,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions

Job Summary
The Assistant Vice President of Facilities Operations & Maintenance is an experienced senior leader responsible for overseeing the efficient management and maintenance of UTSA's facilities, encompassing six million gross square feet of classrooms, laboratories, research, and auxiliary facilities across five campuses. This key leadership role provides strategic guidance and operational direction to a team of over 140 maintenance employees and multiple third-party service contractors, ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness, safety, and functionality across all facilities.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
  1. Develop and implement a comprehensive facilities management strategy aligned with UTSA's mission, vision, and strategic objectives.
  2. Collaborate with senior leadership to identify and prioritize facility needs and improvements to support UTSA's growth and operational efficiency.
  3. Stay updated on industry best practices and emerging trends in facilities management, incorporating innovative approaches to enhance facility operations.
Operational Management
  1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of all facilities, including building maintenance, custodial & grounds services, and utilities management.
  2. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and standards to ensure safe, secure, and well-maintained facilities.
  3. Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of facility operations.
  4. Manage vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and ensure the delivery of high-quality services within budgetary constraints.
Budgeting and Financial Management
  1. Develop and manage the facilities department budget, including forecasting expenses, tracking expenditures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  2. Collaborate with finance and procurement teams to optimize procurement processes and secure competitive pricing for facility-related goods and services.
  3. Conduct financial analysis to assess the return on investment (ROI) for facility strategic improvements and recommend appropriate funding allocations.
Team Leadership and Development

  2. Lead and supervise a diverse team of facility professionals, including maintenance staff, administrative support, and third-party service contractors.
  3. Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, promoting professional growth, providing mentorship, and conducting performance evaluations.
  4. Identify training and development opportunities to enhance the skills and knowledge of the facilities team.
  5. Promote a culture of safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement within the facilities department.
Compliance and Risk Management
  1. Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, codes, and standards related to facility operations, including health and safety guidelines.
  2. Implement risk management strategies to mitigate potential hazards and vulnerabilities within facilities.
  3. Collaborate with legal and risk management departments to address any facility-related legal or insurance matters.
  4. Collaborate with Campus Construction to provide facilities support, resources, and timely constructability reviews for project phases: design, construction, substantial completion, warranty, and facilities hand-off.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Ten years of experience in facilities operations and management.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and financial management.
  • Demonstrated experience in contract negotiation and vendor performance management.
  • Proven track record of effectively managing large teams and complex facilities over multiple campuses.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of facilities management principles, practices, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and facility management software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree and/or licensed professional engineer is preferred.
  • Educational and Research Institution experience preferred.
Working Conditions

Working Environment:
  • Office Environment.
  • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events.
  • After hours and weekend work is required on an occasional basis.
Physical Demands:
  • Sedentary office work; sitting - routinely.
  • Lifting and exerts up to 10 lbs. of force - occasionally.
Primary work location will be on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
