The successful candidate will have a strong background in atmospheric science, climate change, and numerical modeling, with a focus on investigating the impacts of urbanization on extreme weather events, particularly in the Gulf Mexico coastal states. The candidate will be based at UT Austin and be affiliated in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The researcher will get an opportunity to actively collaborate with different research groups at UT Austin and also with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Austin is a highly vibrant city and provides access to numerous activities beyond the research and academic experience through UT Austin. Under the supervision of Drs. Zong-Liang Yang and Dev Niyogi, this research will investigate the impacts of urbanization and global warming on landfalling TCs through a comprehensive approach involving numerical modeling and deep learning techniques. Purpose To investigate the impacts of urbanization and global warming on landfalling TCs through a comprehensive approach involving numerical modeling and deep learning techniques. Responsibilities Proficient in numerical modeling, including Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model and Urban Canopy model (UCM). Experience in model modification and development. Strong programming skills in NCAR Command Language (NCL), Python, Linux, and script languages. Research background and skills in urban meteorology and climate, climate change, atmospheric dynamics, and dynamical downscaling with high-resolution meso-scale models. Expertise in model evaluation and climate analysis based on observations and reanalysis data. Ability to analyze and diagnose extreme weather systems such as heatwaves, extreme rainfall, and tropical cyclones. Required Qualifications PhD received within the last 3 years. Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Climate Science, or related field. Demonstrated research experience in examining the sensitivity of extreme rainfall to urban impact and land cover change using numerical modeling techniques. Experience in projecting future extreme precipitation events under urban development and global warming scenarios, with a focus on a subtropical coastal region. Expertise in testing the impacts of urbanization on tropical cyclone extreme rainfall using observations and high-resolution model simulations. Strong background in investigating the role of urban impact on extreme precipitation in different seasons and weather systems, utilizing observations and high-resolution model simulations. Experience in using the pseudo global warming method to investigate future changes in tropical cyclone intensity and precipitation. Proficiency in investigating the dual forcing of climate change and rapid urban development on heatwaves, through multi-scale numerical simulations. Ability to understand how urban heat and roughness affect landfalling tropical cyclone intensity based on numerical modeling and case studies. Prior experience providing services for feasibility studies using global variable-resolution meteorological models for air quality simulation.
