This position provides for work-life balance with typically a 40-hours work week that includes flexible work arrangements. Eligibility and requirements to be discussed during the interview. Purpose To provide services that promotes safe and compliant facilities and ensure environmental quality for the University community. To provide technical skills in the operation and support of environmental health and safety programs in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies. Responsibilities Responsible for the safe collection, handling, and processing of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials for the University of Texas at Austin campuses following all regulatory requirements and internal procedures. This includes communicating effectively with internal customers to coordinate waste collections, address procedural waste management issues, and report waste management issues to senior staff or management as needed. Maintains accurate up-to-date records of the collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials following all regulatory requirements and internal procedures. Participate in the review and development of standard operating procedures with direct oversite from senior staff or management. Responsible for conducting inspections, monitoring, and testing of sites, and the collection environmental samples under the direction of senior environmental staff to comply with permit requirements of storm water, wastewater, SPCC, PST and other environmental programs. Continuous education through internal cross-training, external courses, and attending conferences or seminars where applicable. Responds to environmental health and safety issues, complaints, and emergencies including hazardous/non-hazardous spills, odors, contamination, and injuries/exposures. Must be able to accurately gather information related to the potential impacts to the environment, personnel, or facility safety and clearly communicate findings to senior staff or management. Must be able to assist in resolving incidents and may perform incident investigations with direct oversite from senior staff or management. Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Science, Natural Science, Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences or Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene or related field. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Two years of experience in environmental health and safety or a related field. Experience with environmental programs such as hazardous waste management, SPCC, Stormwater, PST, or wastewater. Currently certified Hazardous Waste Operator or attended Hazardous Materials training. Has attended training to be a Department of Transportation certified shipper for Hazardous Materials. Driving Required This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Salary Range $46,000 depending on qualifications Working Conditions For Remote Workers: May work around standard office conditions Repetitive use of keyboard at a workstation Work will be performed remotely through remote connections Environmental Demands: Uniforms and/or personal protection equipment (furnished) May work in all weather conditions May work in extreme temperatures May work around chemical fumes May work around standard office conditions May work around biohazards May work around chemicals May work around electrical and mechanical hazards Physical Tasks: Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation Use of manual dexterity Climbing of stairs Climbing of ladders Lifting and moving Additional Working Conditions: May be required to work in confined spaces, manholes, tunnels, elevated work, extended shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions. May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels. May be required to lift up to 50lbs. Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend. Participate in on-call program. Work Shift 40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, 08:00 AM – 05:00 PM This position provides for work-life balance with typically a 40-hours work week that includes the potential for a flexible work arrangement.
