 UChicago Medicine is seeking a seasoned and collaborative Assistant Director, cGMP Cell Manufacturing to join us at our medical campus in Hyde Park.

In this position you will design and develop novel platforms and systems for manufacture of cellular therapies in a current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) environment. Integrate available technologies and cell therapy manufacturing platforms for scaling up T-cell receptor modification-based cellular therapy products for clinical trials. Partner with bio-pharma companies to facilitate technology transfer and the production of clinical-grade cellular therapy products following standard operating procedures. These cellular therapy products will include, but are not limited to, T cells, dendritic cells, other types of blood cells and mesenchymal stem cells. Write and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and batch records for clinical manufacturing operations. Lead development of product release criteria based on flow cytometry, endotoxin and cell viability/potency testing. Collaborate with program leadership to set up quality systems within the cGMP manufacturing environment. On a non-routine basis, evening and/or weekend work will be required.

What you’ll do as Assistant Technical Director, cGMP Cell Manufacturing:

  • Design, develop and validate systems for cGMP cell manufacturing; document standard operating procedures to ensure traceability of continuous improvement efforts and sustainability of best known standards that deliver high value at the lowest possible cost.
  • Oversee a team of technologists to carry out day-to-day operations; train staff on procedures following standard operating procedures within an ISO7/8 environment; guide staff to meet organizational performance standards and create an environment in which staff feels committed to the vision of the organization and team.
  • Collaborate with faculty investigators to transform laboratory findings into clinical cellular therapies; provide input to those therapies by applying immunology knowledge, bio pharma clinical trial protocols and pharmacy/laboratory manuals.
  • Establish and maintain compliance with policies, procedures, and record keeping necessary to meet the standards of accrediting or regulatory agencies; record and report deviations and errors; represent Advanced Cellular Therapeutics Facility during pharma audits.
  • Present data and reports to the director, pharma clients, faculty/physicians, as well as in national/international forums as needed, including publications of the reports; generate reports for submission to the FDA.
  • Enhance knowledge to continue improving cell manufacturing systems and standards by attending training provided by medical instrumentation vendors, relevant seminars and workshops; transfer knowledge as appropriate to program leadership and staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • D. degree required in Immunology, Biomedical Engineering or closely related field in Life Sciences
  • 1-3 years of postdoctoral experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience in manipulation, culture and assays relevant to human cells required.
  • Experience in training and teaching junior technologists preferred.
  • Experience in analysis and interpretation of flow cytometry data required.
  • At least three years prior work experience in the field of cellular therapy or closely related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and graphical computer programs, and conventional laboratory equipment required.
  • Knowledge and ability to use laboratory hospitals information systems.
  • Ability to use and understand basic statistical concepts and methods that are commonly utilized in clinical laboratory science required.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to stand, stretch, and bend for majority of time worked; ability to lift up to 30 pounds; exceptional organizational ability; ability to work in stressful situations; attention to detail mandatory.
