Description

Position Description Summary/Purpose:

The Department of Biology at the University of Bridgeport invites applications for full-time faculty with broad expertise in organismal biology, environmental science, freshwater or marine biology, and/or ecology. We are additionally seeking candidates with experience teaching introductory courses in general biology and natural science. We seek candidates who are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service, and whose research is accessible to undergraduate collaborators and master’s students. This is a 12-month full-time faculty position. Teaching schedules may include days, evenings and/or weekends, according to the department's needs.

Review of applicants will begin on Tuesday May 28 and continue until the position is filled.

Full-time faculty members at the University of Bridgeport are responsible for maintaining the highest academic standards in their disciplines. Faculty advise students; develop and maintain curriculum; stay current in their disciplines; stay current with pedagogy and teaching methodology; participate in on- and off-campus staff development activities; fulfill administrative responsibilities relevant to their positions; and participate in college and community service.

Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities

  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach across the biology curriculum with specialization preference in related fields, serving the needs of the undergraduate and graduate degree curricula as well as General Education requirements and introductory course for students in the Health Sciences.
  • Develop course materials and ensure that each course contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, maintains currency, and is aligned with program and course outcomes. 
  • Apply best pedagogical practices to the assessment of student learning outcomes, organization of LMS resources, and classroom management, within the framework of the UB syllabus template.  
  • Engage in research and scholarly activities within your discipline and engage students in your research.
  • Attend department meetings and participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of program goals and curriculum review based on student learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrate professional attitude, philosophy, compassion, and commitment that promotes student growth and learning.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill: 

  • Demonstrated commitment to developing and fostering best practices and policies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and build an environment in which all members of the University community are treated with respect and dignity.
  • Ability to work in laboratory settings and maintain safety protocols.
  • Experience with developing online course materials, including developing innovative online experiential learning.
  • Ability to work flexibly according to the needs of the department, including evening classes and online.
  • Ability to analyze, synthesize and interpret student learning outcome data to improve teaching and learning.
  • Ability to exercise individual initiative, independent action, and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work collegially in a team environment.

Qualifications


Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in biology or related field in the Natural Sciences preferred. Master’s degree considered in alignment with department needs and candidate expertise and experience.
  • Expertise in one or more aspects of organismal biology and a well-developed research program is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in designing and managing Laboratory instruction.
  • Candidates with a track record or expertise in research using one or more data science tools (genomics, bioinformatics tool development, GIS, etc.) are preferred.
  • Candidates with a track record of peer-reviewed publications and/or externally funded research will be given preference.
  • Ability to demonstrate effectiveness in working with diverse populations.
