PART TIME

Part-Time Youth Minister Position Description

The Youth Minister must have a passion for working with youth and helping them discover a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Youth Minister serves under the supervision of the senior pastor and the staff-parish relations committee and reports to the Administrative Council and church leadership regularly. The Youth Minister will work with other program and ministry staff members.

The Youth Minister will advocate and model United Methodist theology, doctrine, and polity (church government). The Youth Minister will participate in district and conference meetings and events, giving leadership in these settings as opportunities arise.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: 4 year college degree preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years working with youth grades 6-12
  • Must have a clear theological and biblical understanding and respect for the teachings of United Methodist doctrine
  • Must have a Christ-like attitude, be enthusiastic, an encourager, visionary and self-starter, and have the ability to work with minimum direction
  • Must be open-minded and accepting of youth with diverse perspectives and worldviews
  • Must have strong leadership, communication and organizational skills
  • Background check mandatory for anyone working with children /youth. This is in compliance with Children and Youth Protection policy
  • Two references required (One personal, one professional)

Note: Applicant will be subject to a 90 day probationary period.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Regarding Youth and Parents

  • Promote active discipleship among the youth (Grades 6th-12th)
  • Encourage youth and their families in spiritual formation and growth
  • Develop healthy relationships with youth and their families
  • Coordinate parent meetings quarterly or more often, if necessary
  • Encourage and promote the integration of youth into the life of the whole congregation: worship, choirs, committees, missions, etc.

Regarding Leadership

  • Actively participate and enforce Children and Youth Protection policy
  • Coordinate and co-lead Youth Council meetings for the purpose of planning, implementing, and leading youth ministry in worship, music ministry, fellowship, missions, etc.
  • Recruit volunteers to assist with youth program and events
  • Attend continuing education events at least annually for training and spiritual renewal and growth
  • The Youth Minister is expected to be present at Sunday worship, occasionally assisting in leadership

Programming

  • Coordinate Youth events and Youth schedule with the church calendar
  • Coordinate and lead youth programming
  • Oversee and select youth curriculum.
  • Coordinate regular service projects and fund-raising activities
  • Coordinate missions, discipleship, and fellowship events as necessary (missions, retreats, camps, recreation, etc.)
  • Coordinate summer plans (missions, retreats, camps, recreation, etc.)
  • Coordinate participation in district, conference, jurisdictional, and General Conference activities
  • Be present for supervision at events where youth have leadership responsibilities

Responsibilities of the Church

Fulfilling these responsibilities will help to assure the success and growth of the Youth Minister by providing benefits, education and boundaries.

  • Salaried Non-exempt Employee: Annual Salary of $10,000/year based on an average of 10 hours a week.
  • Annual evaluation: Based on this job description and any annual goals

Recommended Allotment of Weekly Time/Work

  • 75% - Working with, planning for, ministering to youth and their families
  • 20% - Necessary administrative and organizational tasks
  • 5% - Assisting with the church’s and pastor’s week-to-week needs
