DescriptionAbout The Trustees: The Trustees of Reservations (The Trustees) is the nation’s premier conservation and preservation organization. Founded in 1891 by a group of visionary volunteers, we preserve, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts. We aim to protect special places for future generations to enjoy in perpetuity. We have helped protect more than 50,000 acres, including 27,000 acres on more than 120 reservations that are open to the public. We are a non-profit conservation organization funded and supported entirely by our visitors, supporters, volunteers, and our 100,000 Member households.
Pay Range: $50,000 - $56,000
The MetroWest Regional Education Manager is a key role on the Trustees MetroWest team, reporting to the Senior Regional Engagement Manager. The role is responsible for educational programming including tours and field trips, for four highly regarded museums and historic properties: The deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Fruitlands Museum, the Old Manse, and historic Powisset Farm. Two popular children’s summer day camps also report into the regional education manager.
The Regional Education Manager creates, develops and manages vibrant experiential and inquiry-based educational programming to engage audiences of all ages in the art, sculpture, history, agricultural and cultural resources at the properties. The role shares the conservation and preservation work of the Trustees through the lens of education at these special properties. The position is the primary program liaison to schools, educational tour companies, local community organizations and education partners. The role is highly collaborative, including team interface with engagement, agriculture, curatorial, interpretation and stewardship staff as well as Trustees statewide centers of excellence. The Regional Education Manager is responsible for a team of tour guides, interpreters, camp directors, and seasonal educators.
The Regional Education Manager is based at Fruitlands Museum with weekly travel to deCordova and the Old Manse and occasional travel to other MetroWest properties. A flexible work schedule includes some weekend and evening hours.
Essential Functions Include, But Are Not Limited To
  • Direct the development and execution of art, history, and nature education programs for youth, educators, families, and the general public.
  • Design and adapt curriculum, train interpreters and lead school field trip programs and educational tours at Fruitlands Museum and the Old Manse. Design and lead a limited number of school field trips at Powisset Farm.
  • Manage two consistently sold-out children’s summer day camps at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum and Powisset Farm.
  • Manage regional education budget including reaching established financial goals.
  • Center Indigenous perspectives, working with members of Fruitlands Native American Advisory Team and curatorial staff to create new educational offerings for schools. This may include building relationships with local Indigenous communities and artists.
  • Grow partnership programs with local school districts.
  • Work to expand the audience base to include more diverse audiences, actively marketing and delivering excellent content, and customer service to all.
  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise interpreters/educators in the delivery of all aspects of educational programming.
  • Schedule, invoice, and manage student and adult groups and ensure accurate record-keeping.
  • Collaborate with the statewide Trustees Education & Engagement Department and staff at other Trustees sites to align curriculum and program plans and collaborate on statewide initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QualificationsQualifications:
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience
  • 1-3 years of supervisor experience
  • A track record of success in developing and implementing educational programming in museum or historic property setting
  • A respected trainer and manager of staff with the ability to build a motivated team
  • A desire and ability to create and lead educational programming designed to spark imaginations, foster a spirit of lifelong learning, and stoke excitement to return to the property and share it with others
  • Has experience and enjoys working with children and the general public.
  • A self-starter who is comfortable working individually and as part of a larger team
  • A cool, calm, no-drama demeanor particularly in high-pressure situations
  • A terrific sense of humor and collaborative nature
  • A drive to constantly improve and deliver excellence in educational programming
  • A love of learners from diverse backgrounds
  • A strong commitment to the Trustees mission
