The Town of Batesburg-Leesville is Hiring an ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF Near Leesville, SC

Professional, administrative, technical and supervisory support to the Fire Chief and Fire Department;
performs line operations as necessary. Position will work a Monday through Friday schedule from 8:00 am until
5:00 pm. Responds to structure fires, emergency events, storms or other emergency situations and assists in
emergency strategies. May assume supervisory authority of an area of responsibility within the emergency event or
assume overall command and control of the event. Participates in a scheduled rotation of duty chief remaining
available to respond to emergency incidents 24 hours a day to engage in fire department operations to minimize the
further destruction of property by fire or other hazards.

Conducts assigned fire and life safety inspections of existing structures, new structures and modifications
within existing structures including construction features, automatic sprinklers and other fire protection systems, fire
alarm systems, life safety features, and hazardous materials and processes in order to evaluate compliance with the
South Carolina Fire Code and related construction codes for compliance. Interprets and applies regulations in a
variety of circumstances with multiple variables.

Communicates in writing and orally with the public, contractors, vendors, architects, engineers, State Fire
Marshal, law enforcement etc., in compliance and enforcement activities. Issues citations or has citation issued for
fire code violations. Electronically and manually documents inspections, identifying and documenting corrective
action required for Code compliance.

Schedules vacation, holidays and sick leave to ensure minimum staffing levels. Participates and advises in
the hiring and promotion of Departmental personnel Supervises the maintenance and upkeep of facilities, and
equipment. Will be responsible for the coordination Fire Prevention, public safety demonstrations, and public
outreach programs. Represents the Chief at board meetings when necessary. Serves on boards and committees in the
Town and County at the Chief's request. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other B-L
Departments, State agencies, schools, medical facilities and other groups in relation to fire regulations and
ordinances.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Firefighter II (IFSAC/NFPA Curriculum or equivalent)
  • Valid SC issued Class E driver's license
  • Basic First Aid/CPR Certification/Narcan Training (National Registry EMR/EMT preferred)
  • Pump Ops 1
  • EVDT
  • SC State Fire Marshal Rules and Regulations within 3 months of hire.

Within 1 year:

  • ICC Fire Inspector 1 (NFPA, Pro Board, or equivalent coursework – Legacy South Carolina Resident Fire
Marshal Certification is accepted if current)
  • Fire Officer 1
  • ICS 700, ICS 800, ICS 100 & 200
  • Fire Investigation Certification or investigation awareness course of not less than a 16-hour program

Within 2 years:

  • ICC Fire Inspector 2
  • An accreted fire investigation certification or course
  • National Registry EMR/EMT
  • Fire Officer 2
  • Incident Safety Officer
  • ICS 300 & 400
  • National Fire Academy Leadership 1, 2, 3 classes

Salary Info: Salary range based on qualifications, medical, vision, dental, life insurance, annual leave, paid sick
leave, and SC Police Officer Retirement.
