WEIGHTS AND MEASURES INVESTIGATOR

Full Time: 37.5 hours

$22.06/hour - $29.43/hour

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures Division has a full-time vacancy for 13-1040 Compliance Officers-3.

Summary:

Enforces the provisions of the Weights and Measures Act by conducting investigations of alleged consumer fraud involving weights and measures, recommending appropriate recourse, and enforcing all relevant rules, laws, and regulations.

18 Months of additional relevant experience = Associate's degree

36 Months of additional relevant experience = Bachelor's degree

54 Months of additional relevant experience = Master's degree

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Associate’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited institute of higher education. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Four years of experience in law enforcement, compliance or regulatory work. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

License/Certification : Must be certified as a part-time police officer by the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council within the first six (6) months of employment. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. No criminal record except minor traffic violations.

2. Must be able to frequently lift and handle weights up to 100 pounds.

Responsibilities:

· Reviews the inspection reports of registered service technicians for accuracy, adherence to proper and complete procedure, and compliance with state laws. Performs inspections on various weighing and measuring devices.

· Conducts audits of work performed by service technicians and weighmasters. Identifies deficiencies, determines corrective measures and provides training, either one-on-one or in a group setting.

· Makes frequent and important contacts with proprietors, operators, managers or employees of various establishments as well as with local, county, state and federal law enforcement to provide technical assistance and explain weights and measures rules, laws and regulations.

· Maintains and utilizes knowledge of current laws to effectively deal with arrests, searches and seizures, and to prosecute violators through the administrative or judicial process. Testifies in quasi-judicial hearings before the commissioner or the commissioner’s designee on violations discovered in the course of investigations.

· Interviews victims, suspects and witnesses to determine possible violations of the provisions of the Weights and Measures Act. Gathers evidence needed to ensure successful accountability. Maintains accurate records of investigations.

· Delegates tasks to coworkers assigned to assist with an investigation.

· Responds to and investigates complaints received from the general public concerning violations of weights and measures laws and rules. Determines and makes recommendations of penalty to the Director of the Division of Weights and Measures based on findings of investigation.

· Develops information on prevailing procedures in commercial quantity determination and on possible violations.

· Issues stop-sale orders when pre-packaged commodities are discovered to be sold, offered or exposed for sale in violation of state laws or rules.

· Coordinates with local law enforcement agencies to arrest persons involved in violations of weights and measures statutes and regulations, as required.
