ASSISTANT RESEARCH ENGINEER

(CIVIL ENGINEER IV)

40 Hours per week

The starting pay range for this position is $30.72 - $41.76 per hour

This position offers a Trainee Status* at the following pay rate: $29.43per hour

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Material and Research has a full-time vacancy for Assistant Research Engineer (Civil Engineer IV).

Summary:

To plan, coordinate, and direct major engineering activities associated with transportation research and product investigations. To assist the Research Engineer by providing technical expertise and coordination of research-related issues including implementation and technology transfer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master’s degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Experience: Four (4) years of post-baccalaureate experience in the practice of engineering.

OR

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering.

Experience: Six years of post-baccalaureate experience in the practice of engineering.

OR

Education: Associate's degree from an accredited institute of higher education with a major study in engineering or engineering technology.

Experience: Six years of experience in the practice of engineering at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I (or higher), plus two additional years of experience in a position comparable to an Engineering Technician.

License/Certification: Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license and/or have access to transportation for statewide travel. The applicant’s Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet the minimum standards as established by the hiring agency. Must be a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New Hampshire or a Licensed Professional Engineer in another state and obtain licensure in NH within one year of employment. Licensure designation must be in Civil, Civil Highway, Geo Technical or Structural Engineering.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All accountabilities must be performed in accordance with State and Department rules and policies, including risk management, safety and environmental standards, regulations and administrative orders.

Responsibilities:

Researches, analyzes, and presents improved or innovative technologies for construction, maintenance, design and assessment of transportation facilities and components. Studies and recommends technical enhancements and solutions to transportation issues based on research results.

Plans and directs the execution and monitoring of research projects and experimental features. Prepares and reviews technical reports. Coordinates the publication and/or distribution of research findings.

Reviews and recommends improvements to research protocols, evaluation procedures, and assessment techniques for engineered systems, materials, and processes.

Communicates with various organizations to obtain appropriate input for research projects. Facilitates, oversees, and documents transportation research and implementation activities. Prepares various communications about research including newsletters, technical briefs, and posters.

Supervises the training and education of personnel in proper research, evaluation, and analysis techniques.

Assists the Research Engineer in administering the Department’s SPR2 program. Enforces the requirements of 23 CFR Part 420. Develops databases, spreadsheets, and other tools for managing research activities.

Administers specific contracted research projects and Statewide agreements. Examines and directs research consultants and technical advisory group. Reviews project documentation, approves progress payments, and maintains logs of project finances. Provides technical review of work plans and research reports and/or deliverables.

Chairs or serves on committees for local, regional, and national research projects or programs.

Provides literature and/or industry review of innovative products for Department use.

Assumes the responsibilities of the Research Engineer in their absence.
