Compensation:

  • Annual Salary Range: $33,612.80 – $41,870.40
  • Hourly Pay Range: $16.16 – $20.13

Note: Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications following the Career Ladder Policy PER-18. Review of certifications will be based on qualifications and proof of certification. Starting pay will be reviewed by Troop I and they will make the final determination.

  • Motor Carrier Inspector I – Entry Level Civilian position. $16.16 22/5.
  • Motor Carrier Inspector II – Certification of Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Level II. $17.79 24/5.
  • Motor Carrier Inspector III – Minimum two (2) years’ experience as MCI II or a minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a CVSA certified Level I Inspector. $20.13 27/4.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary: MCI I is an entry level position with emphasis upon formal and on-the-job training, gaining experience, and knowledge to advance in the MCI career progression. Uniforms are worn for this position.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Incumbent will learn policies, procedures, and develop competency in the following areas.

  • Inspect commercial motor vehicles at a stationary weight facility and writes citations for violations to ensure the protection of the motoring public, the safety of the highways and road, and enforcement of motor carrier laws and regulations.
  • Inspects commercial motor vehicles for oversized loads, permits, warning flags, signage, and for special requirements, such as flagman, or pilot car.
  • Weighs commercial motor vehicles to ensure that no overweight vehicles travel on highways.
  • Conducts investigations and inspections in accordance with law and policies.
  • Visually examine and inspect commercial motor vehicles to check for proper signage, labeling, display of licenses, size, volume, and weight compliances.
  • Check registrations, licenses, permits, insurance, and conduct CVSA inspections, in order to detect or deter illegal transport activities.
  • Check for dyed fuel usage.
  • Check the registration and Vehicle Identification Number to verify ownership and proper registration.
  • Explain to carriers the correct way to apply for permanent licenses and permits.
  • Explain and instructs drivers on a one-on-one basis on correct driver's daily log procedures and vehicle requirements.
  • Issues citations to violators, inspects permits, and files complaints for violations of state motor carrier laws and regulations.
  • Testify in court to gain conviction for issued citation.
  • Prepare daily reports of generated activity and permits, and remits monies collected.
  • Answers questions by phone and in person relative to the inspection, applicable permits, and registration of motor carriers; inquiries relating to permits, licenses, and laws governing commercial motor vehicles.
  • Establishes and maintains professional lines of communication with employees, public, and other law enforcement agencies.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Licensing & Certification: Valid Kansas Driver’s License.

Minimum Qualifications: Ability to visually inspect driver’s license, registrations, permits, medical card, etc.; ability to see details up close and at a distance. Measure axles, inspect tires, climb on and crawl under and around trucks. Must be able to walk, kneel, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods, get in and out of vehicles, bend, squat, stoop, twist, reach with body, arms and/or legs, push, pull, stretch, drive, grasp, speak clearly, listen and comprehend verbal and written instructions, climb on and crawl under and around trucks, and shovel snow; key for typing, and occasionally lift 30 lbs or more. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to listen, comprehend, and communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing, with fellow employees and the general public. Proficient with computer software programs. Ability to multi-task, read and write comprehensively. Accurately type alpha-numerical figures. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Preferred: Knowledge of dyed fuel.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must submit to and pass a thorough background investigation and fingerprint-based check.
Moderate physical exertion, exposure to irritant chemicals, hazardous materials, working around moving vehicles, unsafe vehicles, adverse weather conditions, high levels of sound, exposure to abusive or hostile drivers.
Must become knowledgeable of the State of Kansas dyed fuel inspection program. Must obtain Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Level III certification, complete dyed fuel training and attend a KCC class within one (1) year of hire date. Once certified, must meet inspection requirements as outlines in agency policy. Must successfully complete and maintain certifications.
