Laid out on a 78-acre campus, Larned State Hospital (LSH) is the largest psychiatric facility in the state serving the western two-thirds of Kansas with nearly 1,000 employees and the capacity to treat more than 450 patients daily, 24-hours a day, seven days a week. LSH is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) and certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Position Summary: To provide for the surveillance of and response to the infection control issues as they arise at LSH. This position is also responsible for any COVID-19 related issues. In addition, this position assures that the related Employee Health Program services are implemented in accordance with LSH policy. Assist with consolidated clinic services which include: medical clinic, vision clinic, dental clinic, GYN clinic, physical therapy, ECG and central supply. Extreme latitude is allowed with responsibilities and independent judgment. General guidelines are given for infection control. Most guidelines are developed for research by the RN by review of infection control literature, MMR, TJC standards for medical services, D.S., ECG, quality improvement, physical rehabilitation, nursing, dietary, laundry, safety, leadership, environmental services, and hazmat.
Infection surveillance – review all daily infection reports forms (DIRF) for any trends, suspicious infections, cultures ordered, etc.
Update DIRF compliance monitor
Review Plexus documentation and determine if infection meets criterion to be classified as Healthcare Acquired Infection. Enter infection information into Plexus “Nosocomial Data Entry”. Share concerns with medical staff, CNO (Chief Nursing Officer), Unit Leader, etc.
Tuberculosis Screening (New Admits to PSP Program), add names, TB screening data (date of testing, refusal, no orders, TB assessment) to tracking spreadsheet. Report out percentage of compliance at CEC on a quarterly basis
Review all new admissions Plexus documentation for active or history of MRSA or other MDRO’s or communicable disease. MDRO/MRSA information is shared with CIM so that information can be added to the patient’s fact sheet and CITP
Maintain log sheet of all clinic services for patient and employees
Update infection control website
Complete emergency cart and refrigerator temperature log sheets (if clinic LPN is not at facility)
Complete weekly environment of care tour with LSH safety officer
Present new employee orientation on infection control. Prepare new employee health file and obtain all required health paperwork. Give TB skin test to new employees.
Review infection control data for any trends
Complete mock survey as assigned
Complete month TB surveillance data compliance percentage by unit/program
Send CIM log of all EKGs and Sonograms
Maintain employee health files
Quarterly attend infection control committee. Document minutes and post the minutes to the infection control intranet website
Quarterly submit TB surveillance report and MRSA data to CEC for report out
Clinic sharps audit
Review Plexus documentation
Maintain employee health files
Offer and administer employee vaccination and TB skin test
Enter vaccination data into KANPHIX system
Assist clinic LPN with central supply
Assist clinic LPN with IR clinics and the scheduling of the clinic
Assist clinic LPN with durable medical equipment
Assist clinic LPN with eye glasses and repair
