Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The ADON is responsible for administrative leadership, recruitment/retention efforts and compliance of all Larned State Hospital Policies and Procedures. The RN in this position must guide and encourage employee participation in quality initiatives through application of overall knowledge of the agency and its programs, specifically the SSP program. Encourage involvement and commitment to performance improvement activities; support the hospital in the pursuit of its mission. ADON assist with management of COVID-19

Responsible for assisting in disciplinary actions which may or may not require the approval of the DON. Provides supervision to Registered Nurses regarding policies, procedures and patient care delivery. Instructions and guidelines are given by formal and informal coaching and mentoring. Employee is allowed considerable amount of independent judgment.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Provides Administrative Leadership:

  • Collaborates with SSP Program Director and Chief Nursing Officer in the administration of services within LSH
  • Serves as resource person to nursing personnel.
  • Responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all applicable standards and laws.
  • Collaborates with Unit Leaders and Staff Development to achieve effective orientation of new employees.
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice.
  • Encourages ongoing professional development of others.
  • Collaborates with other nursing leaders to update professional policies and procedures through close review and consultation.
  • Collaborates with nursing staff of the treatment team/programs to assure maintenance of professional standards within all aspects of hospital functioning.
  • Communicates significant issues to Nursing staff, Unit Leaders, Program Director and Chief Nursing Officer through, e-mail, telephone, face to face and in writing.
  • Collaborates with SSP Program Director and Chief Nursing Officer to monitor the effectiveness of Unit Leaders.
  • Responsible for recruitment and retention efforts of Nursing Staff.

Provides Clinical Leadership:

  • Ensures all nursing staff focuses on treatment plan implementation through spot checks.
  • Works with staff development to plan and implement training according to needs identified in Nursing Leadership.
  • Represents the nursing department in Risk Management issues through committee membership.
  • Serves as designee for Chief Nursing Officer as necessary.

Provides Supervision:

  • Initiates and conducts disciplinary actions based on performance expectations.
  • Prompt notification of Chief Nursing Officer, Human Resources and SSP Program Director regarding performance issues related to professional standards.
  • Provides consistent enforcement of standards.
  • Supports nursing standards of patient care and standards of nursing practice.
  • Coordinates the nursing service functions of participation with the governing body, management, risk management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the organization’s decision-making structures and processes.
  • Set and communicate expectations regarding performance, behavior, attitude and conduct that are measurable, understandable timely, verifiable and reasonable through the use of tools such as the position description and performance review.
  • Confront poor performance or behavior and address the issues in a prompt manner.
  • Provide frequent performance feedback and coaching in timely manner
  • Ensures Performance Review Forms (PRF’s) are based on professional performance expectations and in compliance with timeliness.

Communication of Leadership:

  • Set direction, boundaries and build alignment with a sense of commitment by developing a shared picture of the future.
  • Model the behavior expected of others.
  • Demonstrate support for decisions regarding the agency’s strategic direction.
  • Facilitate the flow of information among employees and teams by gleaning relevant and important information and presenting it clearly and concisely, using an appropriate medium.
  • Ensure nursing employees know and understand the hospital’s mission, vision and value; relevant policy changes and what is different, if anything, from what has been in place, for employees to exert their efforts and emphasis for any expected change.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • At the time of the appointment the selected employee must possess a Kansas license/temporary permit, or be given authority to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
  • Requires an approved drug test approved by the Kansas Department of Administration unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties.
  • CPI Training
  • CPR Certification
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree with two (2) years’ experience. Experience with supervising clinical areas. Prefer experience in Psychiatric Nursing.

  • Actively pursuing Bachelor in Nursing or commensurate training, skill or knowledge in the care of the mentally ill.

  • Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
