POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief of Forensics for the Tallahassee Region oversees the disciplines within the laboratory as well as the DNA Database and the BIS unit. This position reports directly to the Forensic Services Director and is a part of the Executive Council for agency wide planning and implementation activities. This position is also the program manager for the Toxicology and Digital Evidence forensic programs.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific duties include:

  • Participating in and developing major forensic policy decisions, forensic service delivery, human resource administration and management, and administration of the budget;
  • Providing oversight and direction of crime laboratory analyst supervisors;
  • Ensuring the application of uniform practices and policies;
  • Managing quality assurance within every discipline in the regional laboratory to ensure the integrity of the work product or processes;
  • Assessing laboratory quality assurance requirements; managing laboratory proficiency testing; reviewing laboratory line inspections and quality audits; acting as a liaison with representatives of ANAB;
  • Managing the regional budget;
  • Applying and interpreting information obtained from the laboratory’s automated information systems, including member performance;
  • Coordinating regional training required for laboratory personnel along with the external training required to satisfy the operational needs of the laboratory customers;
  • Monitors and evaluates customer feedback; manages laboratory-related problems; and
  • Coordinating laboratory safety requirements.

To be considered as a potential candidate, you must meet the minimum qualifications(s) listed below. Degrees must be from an accredited college or university as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional experience in a law enforcement laboratory, one (1) of which must be in a supervisory position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of forensic laboratory management and operations, ISO/IEC 17025 and other related ISO standards, including the ANAB International programs and requirements;
  • Knowledge of forensic crime laboratory safety requirements;
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment needed to minimize risks involved with occupational exposure to blood, other potentially infectious materials, chemicals and waste products;
  • Knowledge of collection, detection, preparation, examination, preservation and documentation requirements of physical evidence in all types of environments;
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques used in the analysis of physical evidence as it applies to the forensic laboratory;
  • Knowledge of the correct procedures for providing expert testimony in court;
  • Knowledge of budgeting, personnel and other administrative practices;
  • Skill in the use of scientific laboratory equipment;
  • Skills to effectively and positively deal with Chiefs of Forensic Services, Technical Leaders, Crime Laboratory Analyst Supervisors, proficiency test providers, vendors and other investigative and forensic professionals in carrying out day to day responsibilities and effectively utilize database and word processing software; and
  • Ability to manage and coordinate laboratory safety inspections to include inventorying drug standards, collecting and disposing of biohazard and chemical waste generated in laboratory environments.

BASE SALARY:

  • $93,000.00

NOTES:

Starting salary will be at the minimum of the class pay range, unless otherwise dictated by FDLE's pay policy. The elements of this selection process may include a work sample and/or interview. Future vacancies may be filled from this position advertisement.
