The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is Hiring an On-Call Mountmaker Near Brooklyn, NY

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Working independently, under the guidance of the Lead Conservation Technician, the On-Call Mountmaker will take an active role in supporting the day-to-day directives of their supervisors.
SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
    • Previous mount making experience preferred.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with strong attention to detail.
    • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
    • Excellent attention to detail with ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment a must.
    • Ability to be proactive, use independent judgment and initiative.
    • Excellent acetylene torch skills and experience fabricating brass mounts.
    • Demonstrated experience in art handling and installation.
    • Open to learning new mount making techniques.
    • Exceptional problem-solving capability, the position requires sound decision making while designing unique mounting solutions for fragile and complicated works of art.
    • Basic carpentry skills and experience with hand power tools.
    • Ability to read and generate design drawings and mounting diagrams.
    • Computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite preferred
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Design mount systems for display and storage of art objects
    • Prepare and maintain mounts for outgoing loans.
    • Responsible for installation and de-installation of works of art.
    • Generate mount documentation and installation instructions.
    • Assist with management and organization of mount making supplies and equipment.
    • Move equipment, assemble and takedown temporary mount making shop at museum.
WORK DEMANDS and ENVIRONMENT:::
    • Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of the Guggenheim’s owned or leased properties upon request.
    • Occasionally work may be conducted outdoors, exposure to varied weather conditions.
    • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays on occasion.
    • Will be exposed to loud machinery.
    • Familiar with chemical hygiene.
    • Able to lift 50 pounds.
    • Operate lifts.
    • Must be able to climb ladders and set up scaffolding.
EDUCATION::
    • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
    • Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, design preferred or equivalent combination of education and technical training.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:: Must be willing to obtain G-60 and F-60 licenses once working with the museum.
REPORTS TO::: :Lead Conservation Technician
LOCATION:: Midtown Warehouses or 1071 5th Avenue.
WORK SCHEDULE:: On-Call, Schedule TBD
POSITION TYPE:: :Non-Exempt, Position covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement with Local 30
SALARY RANGE:: $37.00 to $37.44 per hour
