Summary of essential job functions
Responsibilities encompass the overall management of SPACS participants within a direct care group.
The outline of detail that is included in that role is as follows:
Gives close continuous supervision on an individual basis within the following categories:
Physically dependant with multiple needs (i.e. the participant requires assistance at all times for feeding, dressing, toileting, mobility and personal hygiene).
Severe behavior disorders (i.e. the participant consistently/persistently demonstrates extremely disruptive, antisocial behavior and/or demonstrates profound withdrawal or internalizing behaviors which may be of danger to self and/or others).
Severe handicapped (i.e. students that have a moderate to severe/profound intellectual disability, physical disabilities of chronic health impairment, visual impairment, deaf, hard of hearing or autistic).
Teaching either individual participants or small groups of participants within, or outside, the class.
Developing and adapting conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of participants.
Using special equipment and facilities, such as audio-visual materials and computers to stimulate interest in learning.
Using specialist skills, such as teaching Braille to participants with visual impairments or sign language and lip reading to students who have hearing impairments.
Collaborating with the Curriculum Specialist to define appropriate activities for the participants in relation to the curriculum.
Assessing participant who have long- or short-term learning difficulties, and working with colleagues to identify individual participants' special strengths.
Working with individuals that are on the Autism spectrum
Liaising closely with parents and guardians.
Managing off-site activities, such as community outings or sporting events.
Assisting in severely disabled participants' personal care needs.
Administration, including updating and maintaining daily records on participants' progress.
Attending meetings and in-service training.
