The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education is Hiring a 4-5s Camp Coordinator Near Philadelphia, PA

The Schuylkill Center's 4-5 year old summer camp is an environmentally-focused program that strives to
give children the opportunity to explore and learn about their relationship to the natural world.
Week-long, themed programs offer 4-5 year olds a chance for in-depth explorations of a variety of
nature-related topics. We are seeking a highly motivated, energetic, creative leader who has experience
working with preschool-aged children and a solid understanding of child development and
age-appropriate pedagogy at the preschool level.

The 4-5s Camp Coordinator will work from 8:30 am–4:30 pm Monday–Friday.

Duties include:
Planning and implementing activities for the 4-5 year old camp groups
  • Supervising and mentoring 4-5s camp staff (9 educators total)
  • Assisting the managers of other camp groups with training week for all educators
  • Stepping in to work with camp groups on an as needed basis
  • Serving as the main point-of-contact for 4-5s groups
  • Communicating with camper families when issues cannot be resolved by counselors
  • Mentoring 4-5s camp staff on child development and age-appropriate pedagogy, including

working together on creative solutions to behavioral challenges

Qualifications:
Required

  • Applicants must be 22 years or older
  • A solid understanding of child development and age-appropriate pedagogy at the preschool level
  • Experience working with children ages 4-5 year olds
  • Comfortable in the outdoors and in all weather conditions
  • Ability to supervise and mentor multiple staff members with compassion and effective
communication
  • Demonstrated ability to be a positive role model for staff and campers
  • Strong communications skills and confidence in leading staff and campers
  • Experience in developing nature-based activities for preschool aged children
  • Ability to effectively problem solve and work with staff on creative solutions to problems
Helpful But Not Required
A familiarity with working with children in an outdoor setting
  • An understanding of how to best support children with with special needs and/or varying

abilities

  • Associate or Bachelor's Degree or major in Environmental Science, Education, Early Childhood
Education, Biology, Botany, Horticulture, Agriculture, Outdoor Leadership, or related field

Background Clearances: If hired, employees are responsible for providing a valid Pennsylvania child
abuse clearance, state criminal background check, FBI criminal background check, Mandated Reporter
training, and other background checks that the Schuylkill Center requires based on the applicant’s state
residency. First Aid/CPR training will be provided to applicants who don’t currently have it. Additionally,
as of September 2021, all hires are required to provide proof of vaccination.

Dates of Employment: Position begins on June 5, 2023 and ends on August 18, 2023. The position will
spend June 5-7 helping the other camp managers to prepare for training week. June 8-9 and June 12-16
are training dates for camp staff. The 4-5s Camp Coordinator will be expected to assist with training week
along with the camp managers of other age groups. Camp officially begins on June 19. Camp will be
closed on Tuesday, July 4 for the Independence Day holiday.

Compensation: $7300 for the 11-week period, paid biweekly, housing is not provided.
