THE JOB
The SCAN Foundation (TSF) was founded in 2008 with the mission of helping all older adults age well and with purpose. TSF seeks an MBA Intern, Impact Investing (internally known as SCAN Intern-Graduate) with finance and potentially investment experience, too, to support our new impact investing function. For context, TSF in 2023 began making mission-aligned debt and equity investments, utilizing an initial carveout of 5% of our $250 million total corpus. The Summer Intern will be responsible for supporting the Director of Impact Investments as well as TSF's Innovation and Investments ("I&I") team on the planning and execution for TSF's impact investing initiatives.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Market Intelligence and Pipeline
  • Lead online market research to generate an investment landscaping for a high-potential impact theme for TSF.
  • Screen potential TSF investees and co-investors from the landscaping for: (1) alignment with TSF's strategic objectives; (2) ability to meet the needs of vulnerable older Americans; and (3) the quality of the partner organization.
  • Coordinate outreach to priority organizations, write summaries of discussions, and proactively help the Director of Impact Investments shape the best opportunities into concrete deals. This may involve co-creation of deals with TSF partners.
  • Update TSF's impact investing pipeline regularly, using Salesforce to track and plan outreach to key contacts.
  • In general, stay informed of new developments (e.g., industry investments in relevant themes; trends in funding or industry performance) and report back to I&I on key findings.
Deal Execution (under the supervision of the Director of Impact Investments):
  • Participate in at least one active deal from concept to initial negotiations through to TSF's two-stage approval process (deal dependent).
  • Adapt TSF's due diligence templates to specific deals and serve as primary liaison with investee counterparts throughout the diligence process, including rapid follow-up on due diligence queries.
  • Write at least one pre-screen memo on a promising impact investment following sign-off from the Director of Impact Investments.
  • Assist with communications with TSF counsel, TSF communications staff, and others involved with deals.
Process Improvements and General
  • Working with the Director of Impact Investments, refine and update TSF's impact investing process manual to document key operational procedures including closing, wire protocols, and financial and impact monitoring.
  • Lead the refinement of key TSF templates including pre-screen and investment memos; impact screening framework; and due diligence questionnaires.
  • Create a template financial model for TSF to use on future deals including direct and fund investments.
  • Collect, collate, and analyze impact reporting data received from portfolio companies and incorporate this into TSF's impact framework.
  • As guided by the Director of Impact Investments, work with the Director of Communications to promote our efforts on impact investing with target audiences.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • This is a short-term Summer Internship for MBA students
  • Currently pursuing MBA.Bachelor's Degree in finance, or business-related fields from a leading institution.
  • 1-2 years' experience in finance and (ideally) investing. This could be as part of a school investment club, an internship, or from relevant coursework.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to understand financial statements and interpret investment perfomance (preferred)
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Self-starter, with a positive attitude and strong multi-tasking abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
