Education and Work Experience:

  1. High school diploma plus two years' experience in a sports or youth related field.
  2. Minimum three years' experience coaching Youth Basketball.
  3. As The Salvation Army is a church, the applicant must support the mission and doctrines of The Salvation Army.

Scope of Position: Coordinate weekly basketball program Late Night Hoops at The Sal for the Moore Street Corps including sessions for Elementary, Middle School and High School Youth and Young Adults. Supervise lead facilitator, support staff and volunteers in program. Recruit support for the program in the community, including monetary and volunteer support. Serve as a spiritual mentor and positive role model for young people. Be a bridge to other Salvation Army programs and activities including summer programs.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Bring in special members of the community to work with the kids.
  2. Design and carry out weekly basketball program minimum 7 hours per week (min. 2 hrs. session each for four different age levels) according to PTM standards.
  3. Properly maintain gym and related facilities, supplies, and equipment. Arrange for Water, snacks, food, give away items, etc. Recommend program needs to the Corps Officer.
  4. Recruit, manage and oversee volunteers for the program. Assure that all volunteers complete PTM training.
  5. Recruit children, youth and young adults and other community groups to participate in the program. Marketing materials & postage for mailings
  6. Clean on-site areas (Gym and related facilities) Open and close the gym area.
  7. Oversee coordination of activities for non-basketball personnel during program times for the building of relationships .and be in the community to inform people about the program.
  8. Connect participants to after school and summer programs.
  9. Meet with Corps Officer weekly to review program.
  10. Recruit and accompany a team annually to the Moore St. BB Tourney each May.
  11. Start and close each session with prayer.
  12. Be able to give spiritual coaching as needed to students, youth, young adults, volunteers, and staff as needed. Serve as a spiritual mentor and leader for program participants.
  13. Other related duties as assigned by Office Administrator or Corps Officers.

Schedule: Saturdays 4:30PM-1230AM

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Valid Oregon driver's license, pass MVR check and criminal background check.
  • Ability to pass a background check to be safely around children.
  • Basic knowledge of maintenance, vehicles, and property upkeep.
  • Basketball playing and coaching experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. on a regular basis.

Must be able to bend, squat, twist, and stand, as these movements are a regular requirement of this position.
