Truck Helper/Store Helper_Thrift Store Dept-401JOB SUMMARY:Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.Assists customers in donating, locating and/or selecting store items; stocks and arranges store items in a neat and orderly manner; monitors the store displays and performs various cleaning activities to ensure the store is properly maintained.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:This position description should not be interpreted as all inclusive. The incumbents may be requested to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this position description.Truck Helper Responsibilities:Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route in order to pick-up donated items; assists in navigating driver to destinations by reading a map and/or hand-written directions.Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety.Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same.Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.Loads truck of items to be taken to the dump.Delivers appliances and furniture purchased by customers.Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels on a regular basis; coordinates and may participate in repair work as needed.Store Helper Responsibilities:Assists customers by explaining store policy and responding to questions regarding the pricing and/or purchasing of items; ensures that all customers visiting the store have a pleasant experience.Assists customers who are donating items to The Salvation Army; directs customers to the proper loading/unloading area; may assist with hauling donations to the storage area; prepares and provides tax receipts as needed.Places and arranges items in the store as directed; checks all store displays to ensure that items are maintained and displayed in a neat and orderly manner; rotates and/or rearranges stock as directed; returns items to the proper location after customer's have handled.Answers the store telephone in a tactful and courteous manner; assists customers by responding to questions and providing directions and/or general information; may schedule and record donation pick-ups.Cleans all display racks and shelves; sweeps and mops floors; cleans windows and mirrors; ensures that the store is maintained in a clean and inviting manner.OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:Assumes the responsibilities of the Truck Driver as needed.Assists in performing work in the warehouse as needed.Assists in maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the warehouse and loading dock area.Drives truck in absence of primary Truck Driver.Assists customers in carrying purchased/donated items in/out of the store.Assists in disaster relief projects as needed.Performs other related work as required.MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED:Salvation Army Vehicle Hand-Truck Cleaning Tools and Solutions MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:No formal education required, and six months experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:Valid State Driver's License.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Knowledge of effective customer service techniques.Ability to organize pick-up tickets and to schedule route in a manner that saves time and gasoline consumption.Knowledge of the assigned geographic area.Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.Ability to maintain the store displays in a neat and orderly manner.Ability to follow instructions and work independently.MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:Ability to meet attendance requirements.Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing and ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.Ability to remain and become certified for job specific certifications. licenses and trainings.Physical ability to lift and carry and/or push/pull heavyobjects (less than 100lbs).WORKING CONDITIONS:Truck Helper work requires riding in a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, snow, heat or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.Store Helper work is performed in a warehouse environment where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.All employees recognize that The Salvation Army is a church and agree that they will do nothing as an employee of The Salvation Army to undermine its religious mission.
