CAMP KURATLI AT TRESTLE GLEN MISSION STATEMENT:

The Salvation Army Camp Kuratli at Trestle Glen will be a Christian sanctuary of rest, discovery, and growth to the neediest children in Oregon and Southern Idaho.

SCOPE OF POSITION:

Assist the Camp Director and Divisional Youth Candidates’ Secretaries with orchestration, planning and leadership needs of the summer camp program.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • 2 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Desire to work with youth and young adults.
  • Understanding of Salvation Army policy in regard to hiring, termination, workers compensation matters, time sheets and the Employee Handbook.
  • Good understanding of the laws regarding employment of minors in Oregon.
  • Working knowledge of Oregon Administrative Rules relating to the operation and license of an organizational camp.
  • Understanding of contacting pertinent officials in regard to reporting child abuse.
  • Ability to supervise and provide guidance to staff and campers.
  • Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
  • Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrative commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and creative in spiritual leadership.
  • Ability to operate a telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Possess leadership skills with the ability to plan, originate, organize, and execute special programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for: Under the direction of the Camp Director

  • Responsible for the implementation of the summer camp program.
  • Responsible to attend and participate in programs and spiritual activities.
  • Responsible for creating a weekly staff schedule for summer staff.
  • Responsible for processes involving volunteers and guest staff.
  • Responsible for first day and last day procedures.
  • Responsible for camper discipline in consultation with Head Cabin Leaders.
  • Responsible for the supervision of some summer camp staff, including corrective and disciplinary processes.
  • Responsible for serving as a contact for Human Resource matters.
  • Responsible for enforcing and implementing Salvation Army policy in regard to hiring, termination, workers compensation matters, time sheets and the Employee Handbook.
  • Responsible for enforcing and implementation of Oregon Administrative Rules relating to the operation and license of organizational camp.
  • Responsible for enforcing and implementing the laws regarding employment of minors in Oregon.
  • Responsible to be a contact person for parents, staff, and emergency services as directed.

Assist with: Alongside or in lieu of the Creative Coordinator

  • Assist with designing and planning of the summer camp program.
  • Assist with the programming of daily chapels, campfire, and recreational activities.
  • Assist in all summer camp programs as required e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • Assist in serving as a contact for Human Resource matters.
  • Assist with the programming of daily chapels, campfire, and recreational activities.

General Duties:

  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to campers
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Ensure and assist in the cleanliness of cabins and outside areas.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Camp Director and/or, Divisional Youth and Candidates’ Secretaries.
  • May be required to serve as Break Day Supervisor at times during the season.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, hike and twist on a continuous basis for up to 15-20 minutes or prolonged periods at a time.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects, such as files, file cabinets drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to lift to 25 lbs.
  • Physical ability to respond to a variety of situations; must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There may be phone and in-person contact with others from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.
  • May be required to work in all areas of camp including, but not limited to, the kitchen, dish room, laundry facility and grounds.
  • Working in a distinctively Christian environment.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Work outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.
  • Work around dust, odor, and high noise levels.

MISCELLANEOUS:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. This will be shared with you at the time of employment.

The candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a motor vehicle record check. They must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
